I came among this interesting article where Arthur Chandler compares the 60s to the 90s! That means the hippies to the ravers.

http://charon.sfsu.edu/hippiesandravers.html

What do you think of it? I do think it's kinda true.

I disagree with him at the end (I'm still for "All you need is love") but it's true that some only do it for the money and/or popularity.

imo, Psytrance ravers are the nearest thing to the original Hippies.

Just watched some videos on youtube, I agree but there's also lot of Hardcore ravers who are like that.. it's not the mainstream UK Hardcore you know but if you check out the videos about all the Frenchtekk/Hardtek/Drum & Bass raves, teknivals, dragon festival etc..

But what's with the UK Hardcore scene? It's not as "hippish" but still it's somehow similar.. the drugs, the flashy clothes, the whole "happiness" thing

i would say that the US ravers in the 90s WERE the new hippies, but not anymore. the whole scene has become too materialistic, commercial, and just not as fun anymore for many

i do agree, more or less.

there are some similarities, the giant music festivals and all the plurry love-your-neighbour, everyone at peace kinda thing.

i think there is more of an emphasis now on drugs because... well, there are more drugs available now.

um yeah. we are the hippies v0.2

and yeah, like anything that was once pure and good intentioned, it has now been exploited and capitalized and diluted. it's not what it once was, but we that's a whole different debate entirely.

It's got me thinking though, i guess if the scene is hippyish it would make alot of sense the way things have been going the last 30 years.

But i see were your coming from, the clothes with flowers on is now flashy multicoloured clothes, ect. I guess ive never really thought about it though!

Some would say that it has nothing to do with the clothes, or the drugs, or the lip-service to PLUR, or the music.

It's deeper than all that. More genuine.

i'm not saying the UK ravers were or weren't since i wasn't involved with the UK scene at that time, i can only speak on behalf of the US scene. but i'm sure that there were some similarities

Ya...I would relate Hippies to the Psytrance followers, though, I go to psy parties and I'm a candy raver, but for the people whose Psytrance is their life...ya, those are hippies.

Definitely agree with this. Psy Trancers and a fair few others from the underground rave scene over here. Lots of similarities in lifestyle and outlook on life.

I wouldn't say so at all with your average Hardcore raver these days but the scene looks quite different in the US and Australia so may well be a completely different story.
