I'm trying to get started out as a DJ, playing mostly HHC, trance, and hardstyle. So a couple of my friends in a fraternity told me they were throwing a club night party, and they wanted me to DJ. I played god awful top 40 hits for about an hour, then broke out the HHC. First song I played was the Orbit1 remix of stay with me, from hardcore addiction 2. EVERYONE in the room immediately starts dancing. As the song ends, I start to mix in all systems go, by force and styles, and almost as if they realized there was going to be more than one song, all dancing just stops. Now everyone's sitting around just listening to the song, a couple people come over and tell me to go back to lil wayne and other music I can't stand to listen to.
I realize that a frat party probably isn't the place for HHC, but that raises the question: where is? Where is one supposed to find a start in the Chicago area?

Ay. You all are being terrible. There's tons of hardcore in the midwest. Detroit? 4 hour drive. Get up here and gig!

If I had a car I would take you up on that offer. In the meantime it seems absolutely imaginable that in the second most populated city in the US theres no hardcore scene.

what fraternity r u in? i'm in 1 too and u kno a previous member had the same situation as you. i wouldn't stick to just 1 subgenre of hardcore i'd try and mix it all in: happy, uk/upfront, freeform, gabber, hardcore dnb/breakbeats.
or even what can help is mixing it with other genres of EDM, and i think dubstep would go well considering it has hiphop elements

I'm not in the fraternity, but I was playing at Pi Kappa Phi. I suppose throwing in some other genres of music would help, but that would involve obtaining it and getting another shot. I kind of feel like since I bailed an hour early they probably won't let me DJ again. I just want to find a different scene that can appreciate real dance music...

There is a massive hardstyle & drum + bass scene in Chicago. Hardcore always slips its way into events there. In fact just March 13 in the city was a hardcore event.

You're going to have to find an underground event to play at. Clubs/frat parties are a place built upon more socializing, and I don't think Happy Hardcore is the perfect socializing music, so of course people are only going to dance to one song and then throw a fit if you continue to play all that " fast noise"! Mixing different genres...that will take time to master because of the Tempo changes. You can't pitch a 120bpm track up to 180bpm, and vice versa. The best thing for you to do is to find some fellow Hard Dance friends who are DJs, rent a legal building, throw an event, enjoy the company of maybe 20-50 people who would show up, and then it will gradually grow if those 20-50 people are pleased, because they will tell their friends, who will tell their friends, and so on and so forth.

I'm not sure I could even find 20-50 people here. My campus has a huge Asian community though, maybe its worth a shot? I don't really know anyone else that DJs though D:

Hey hey! I am in Chicago, and you should book me! Haha. I hope to see you tomorrow at CSB, Specimen.
Also, Silver @ Acen = win. Check ravelinks if you really want to see where some of the raves are. There's lots of DnB here, and there's some hardcore at these raves, but they are pretty underground/warehouse style.

Yeah the only problem with acen is that I'll be in Missouri. Also, I wouldn't expect me tomorrow night, finals are coming up and I still have some assignments to finish. I'll let you know if a miracle happens though lol.
