I use only two DJ turntables and a mixer. No laptop, VDJs, Drum machine.
And lets say I have a friend who has two VDJs, a turntable, laptop, and a drum machine.
We both wanna DJ at the same place. Who is more likely to get booked?

Why would the determining factor be the equipment you use? wouldn't it be based on some sort of demo? If you only play turntables you should just mention that you do if you actually get a booking.

People aren't booked based on whether they have completely irrelevant extra's or not. Your expected to play a DJ set. A laptop or anything else is neither required nor of any use. What you should be asking yourself is; 'does whether i play vinyl or not effect bookings?'.

I don't even own any DJ equip and i still get booked, i don't think whether you have all the equip or not matters, at the end of the day it's down to your mixing

You yourself must be practicing on something in order to play out, James. software maybe?
I would still consider that DJ'ing equipment of some sort.

the only thing about getting booked using different than standard dj equipment is you need to show up early and make sure everything can plug in and work properly.
for the most part don't go by word of mouth of what is supposed to be there. I've been told on two occassions that tech 12s would be there and I'd show up to gemini belt drives =/

So tru man! that rave i went to last week my friend was supposed to mix early. we got there about 1/2 an hr b4 his set and they didn't have cdjs, just turntables! so we left 15mins b4 his set started to go pick up cdj1000s at his friend's house and got back there 15mins after his set began. even tho he missed his set he got to play at 1030pm till almost midnight.
good advice on Brian K u should always show up early to check the equipment out or bring ur own set just in case. it's best to be versatile with the equipment b/c most promoters will assume you'll b able to adapt to whatever they have available, and sometimes be able to play whatever genre they ask for.

Nope. How i learnt to play was using turntables when i was over mates house. I was given a few tips, especially when I was with compulsion, and kinda went from there, i didnt have much problem picking up DJing. Now i'm just trying to refine it all and become more precise. But then again i dont really claim to be a DJ, i'm a producer

I'm not asking how you learned. I'm asking what you practice on on a regular basis. Surely the refinement you speak of in your reply must be developed on some sort of equipment, or how else do you go about planning your sets and such?

Ooops! Read that wrong!
I've only ever practiced / performed on Pioneer CDJ's, (usually 800's or 1000's), and SL1200's. No where here really plays Vinyl anymore, it's pretty much all CDJ's, I almost always plan my sets though, but they're usually tentative because it can depend on the crowd and their reaction to the certain styles your playing.

I don't really see what you want to practice, that's like riding a bike, once you know it, you know it forever! Last year when I was gone on holiday for several months I haven't touched any DJ gear for months actually, and when I came back I had absolutely no problem :)
I remember Orbit1 telling me that he learned mixing 2 weeks before his first gig at a friends' house!
