i didn't even think soap operas were popular over there. they're kind of losing their popularity here in the US. the longest running program ever (Guiding Light) ended last year, and As the World Turns will end later this yr. There's only about 6 left.

The american ones were losing views here two, thats when they discovered a whole new genre within a genre: south american soaps. They've even released Mi gorda bella on DVD here :P Personally i thought Juana la Virgen was a great serie

yea those still make a lot of $$$ mainly because the majority of the good ones come on during primetime, and they don't last more than a year. in order to get on the rest of the int'l market (not including the country of origin), they have to do well in the 1st country they're broadcasting
one interesting fact is that if they dont do well in US, the actors are called back to redo the ending, even if the soap opera has already been finished producing.
