Got another good tip for you people today.

Do not make any deals with people who are from Nigeria :P

The story:

My Brother wanted to sell his old cellphone. So I helped him put it up on a local website that's somewhat like craig's list, but supposedly more secure (they do tell you to wait before paying until you got the goods). So I listed it, and just a few minutes after it got publiced (about and 1hr later or so), my brother got a SMS on his new phone saying something like "I like to buy your phone, can you email the amount in Euro?" (I havent seen the SMS so I can verify what it said exactly).

I checked with my brother. Like the schemer he is himself, he told me to raise the costs (from about €260 to €300). So I sent the buyer a mail (might have been a bad from my part) about how much we wanted. And he accepted. Here's the mail in full (you can find very similar texts like this, that's one wait i found out it was purely fake).

quote:
Hello ,

Thanks for your response. I Agree with price So i will be paying directly into your PayPal account without any delay. Get back to me with the details below :

Name:
PayPal Email address
Cell Phone No.

Or you can send me a paypal money request, so once i receive the details i will go ahead with the payment through PayPal.

Please Advice.

At first. I started to wonder where this guy lives (his email was [email protected] btw), so I was hesitant at first, but then I gave him my paypal.

After a while, i got this response from him:

quote:
i have just send the payment now, and by now you should have got a notification from paypal, So kindly go and make the shipment of the item via POSTAL SERVICE { REGISTER RECOMMENDED } and send the shipment tracking number to paypal for the verification ok...so this is where the item will be
ship to:

THIS IS SHIPPING ADDRESS WHERE THE ITEM WILL BE SHIP TO BELOW:

Name : Mukaila Olukayode.
Address : # 20 Oba Adesida Road Akure
City : Akure
State : Ondo State
Zip-Code : 234-34
Country : Nigeria

i will be waiting for your mail soon.

Nigeria... well that's swell

And one from a email supposedly affiliated with paypal:
quote:
Dear My name you trolls,

This message is originated from paypal company. We have received an order from our client "(Randi Sami)" [email protected] regarding the payment made to your paypal account.
The payment has been successfully made but due to security reason we have to receive the shipment tracking number before the next 24 hours for the processing of your order.
This a new measure we are taking to protect both our sellers and buyers against fraudulent customers.
Once you have shipped the item send us the shipment tracking number for verification after the number has verify your account will be credited instantly. This PayPal® payment has been deducted from the buyer's account and has been "APPROVED" but will not be credited to your account until the shipment reference/tracking number is sent to us for shipment verification so as to secure both the buyer and the seller. Below are the necessary information requested before your account will be credited. Send tracking number to us or email us through this mail [email protected]

**PLEASE NOTE**
Once shipment has been verified and the tracking number sent to us, You will received a "CONFIRMATION Email" from PayPal® informing you that the Money has been credited.
Note: eBay and PayPal will be responsible for the item loss or damage once we receive the tracking number
Thank you for using PayPal!
The PayPal Team

This was sent from [email protected] THROUGH [email protected]... Now we're talking!

After checking their website, http://www.shipmentverification.com I shit my pants... literally.

I was about to send my brother's cellphone to Nigeria, and not get any money out of it

... Anyways, here's some options I should do.

  • Ignore it completely.

  • Mail the service with a fake ID and mail the buyer that I have sent the package. If the buyer says that I have sent them a fake ID... guess who's dumber :)

  • Pay to send a brick to the specified address (which google maps cant find)

  • As above, but send a cardboard image of the phone.

There are a few standards. One is that one. The best way to deal with it is flatly refuse to send it until money is safely in your account. Another is they pay for it with real money, but from someones stolen credit card. They get the goods and the money has to go back to the person who owned the card. Another is something along the lines of they "pay" you to much then get you to give them a thousand or so back.

A fairly standard one with cars is someone who works on an oil rig is willing to pay full price over paypal and get their rep to pick it up.

The best way to avoid scams in general is to stubbornly insist on cash in hand and nothing else. Even bank cheques - note: bank cheques, not cheques - have big holes in the transaction. The bank cheque can be cancelled or simply fraudulent. If anyone ever insists on paypal, a big neon warning sign should be flashing through your mind.

In Europe people receive spam-e-mails regulary from Nigeria. Most of them contain about searching banking-trensfer-services for millions of Euros/Dollars with a bonus of 10%. They're always talking about a a huge sum of more than a million bucks.
I don't want to add any prejustices about Nigerians and business, but I allway am totaly alarmed when receiving a Nigerian e-mail.

none of them
Just write to paypal costumer service (the real one) and tell them the story just like you did here. Chances are they do something about it and you will help other people to avoid this scam.
although the cardboard image would be brilliant ...
but you would be wasting money and you don't know for sure if there actually someone over there to receive the stuff... for what we know this could be just a joke from some hacker anywhere else in the world, and there is an abandoned parking lot in the middle of Nigeria full of trash sent from all over the world.
