Hi all,
Curious to know what everyone out there listens to these days?
Reason i ask is i love listening to Happy Hardcore from around 96-98 and German Techno/Happy Rave from around 95/96.Always playing it in the house,in the car or when messing around with the decks.
One or two folk i know have slated me for still being into this kind of Hardcore/Techno from back then, and saying its rubbish!-They just dont appreciate it.
I think the Hardcore these days is much 'harder' and less 'happier' than it was back in the late 90's,but hey thats my own thoughts.
So, interested in what styles everyone out there listens to nowadays in the car, house or what you like mixing etc.
cheers.

I don't think it's harder - it's produced, engineered and mastered better/differently which makes it sound more clear and yes somehow harder - but listen to some Joey Riot stuff (short bassline, cheesy kick) and then listen to some not-so-old-stuff from Vagabond (Heavy Bassline, Half-distorted Kickdrum).
I wouldn't say it's less happier either - yes it doesn't have cheesy pianos and cheesy vocals anymore, but other elements that make it sound ridiculous, and that's what makes it 'funny' ;) For us people it sounds normal because we're used to it, but for someone who's never heard it before, it will sound like clown's music, trust me :)

Mainly a freeform/breakbeat/gabba man myself, but I do appreciate some cheese from now and the 90s, especially rave breaks from the early 90s :) Apart from hardcore I listen to a wide range of stuff.

I'll agree with some of what Revs has said there. The music is still happy, but it's just slightly different elements that have been substituted in to make it happier. Then again, I would say it's more cheesy, than happy. All down to someone's personal opinion on the definition of cheesy v happy, I guess.
Anyways. As for what I listen to - I would say I'm more of a mainstream hardcore kind of guy. Most of the tunes I buy come from labels like Australia With Force, NSR, Badboy Hardcore, Bassface Recordings, Candy Crush Music, Divine UK Hardcore, Electrik Euphoria Digital, Essential Platinum, CLSM, Executive Records, Recycled Records, Fallen Island, FutureWorld, JB Recordings, JAL, Junkbox, Lethal Theory, Muffin Music - the list could go on, but you get the idea by now. Also dip into a bit of Nu Energy's stuff if I'm in a Freeform mood.
Have recently become slightly more interested in Gabba as well.
I've never got into the 90's stuff in a big way at all. I started listening to Hardcore around 2003/2004 and absolutely loved the stuff that was coming out at the time - and I've really loved the way hardcore has gone since then. Well, not that it's gone in a particular direction, I just mean I still love the stuff that's getting made. Obviously you're gonna get a lot of people with the complete opposite opinion.

Normally for me its either 91-94 Breakbeat or Dutch Hardcore from 93-97. Scottish Bouncy Techno still gets a bit of a play and the odd bit of Happy Hardcore. I shun most 2000s Hardcore except some Freeform or early 2000s. Depends on my mood really.

^ agree with this man 100% also this is what I'm listening to!! I have to say there really isn't much happy stuff out at the moment, people seem to think vocals = happy/cheesey but tbh I'd say most vocals now are like "euphoric" which is cool but not really for me. Dougal and Gammer used to have some happy vocals which were cool, I liked that upfront hardcore but mainly I'm either a 1996-98 happy hardcore guy or a 95-96 uber cheesey german etc. hardcore like Dune and Blumchen and stuff.
... sometimes;
Gabber / Frenchcore
J-Core / Speedcore
DNB
House
Old Skool / Disco
Ambient / Experimental
Opera! :)

Touche and one of my reasons to still stick with artists like Blumchen & Dune.

what? Happy Hardcore from 1995-98 has a harder kick/beat than todays hardcore.
personally I prefer Freeform from 2002-2005, UK Hardcore from 2000-2004, Happy Hardcore 1997-2000 and J-core

Yeah I think it does but it's more..sharp and bouncy. Like a beat is a beat and that's that. Modern upfront hardcore tends to be like a beat padded out with a lot of bass.
For me 1995-1998 hardcore had a "BOOM" kick whereas 2003 onwards has a more "DOOOVT" sound to it. It just feels like getting punched as opposed to having a bounce around.
In regards to happy I'd also like to mention that nowadays any "happy" tracks seem really forced or they just sample from older tunes, the 1997 JAL stuff just seemed genuinely happy as opposed to "now we're going to make a happy sounding song" but I think that's probably down to the change in attitude rather than the change in music.

newer hardcore has a prolonged bass sequence, I wouldn't really call it harder than a stab like old happy hardcore used to have.
Not old, but not new either :P. This track sounda lot harder than most newer

Appreciate the replys guys,
its interesting to see our different takes on it.
Love the way you describe the kick as a "DOOVT" sound to it,Nekoshuffle-I totally agree with you and to me its a harder beat than our mid 90's hardcore.Your right about the likes of Jhal, happy hardcore at its best, especially with the birdy singing on vocals :) Not so much a fan of Gabber as you probably guessed or Freeform/Hardstyle/Trancecore etc.Just too head banging lol and not 'happy' enough or should i say 'cheesey' enough for me :)
Like a good bit of the old breakbeat in there too, smoogie! and not forgetting some scottish hardcore.
We all got our own tastes but it is good to here that the old stuff isnt totally neglected and is still listened too.Am in my mid 20's and thought i would have grown out the happy hardcore from 96-98 era but as time goes on i keep filling the laptop with more and more of the stuff and hunting on ebay for rare 12"-and tbh will probably go to my grave listening to it.
Any one else got views on it?
cheers.
