Just opened an account with them and am very concerned at the fact they insist on keeping all your details on file! Seems extremely dodgy to me.

What do you mean, like they ask you for your details? I'd stay away unless it says "https" rather than "http" in the URL :P

PS: Make Rhythmics make more Freeform :P

It doesn't say https but then neither do sites like HMV etc. It's a well known CD/Game/etc. site in the UK - http://www.play.com/ Everyone over here would have heard of it. But after you've created an account and put your order through your details seem to stay on the site (in the same way you can store card details on amazon etc.) but I can't seem to remove them. :-/ Mobile number and DOB too! I would delete my account but I want to get the item I've ordered first and it isn't out till Monday!

Haha I'll do my best. :P He did say he would at one point.

It's not something I'm concerned about, its nothing compared to what you can get from the social service center. You can basically get a persons last known address or his ID number... at least in Sweden. So yea, what about someone storing my address?

sashman: what does https help him? https only helps you getting a secure connection, it doesnt help if someone hacks the site and gets said "file". :P

anyways, if you ask me, your paranoid AW :P
It's the stores way to check up on you so you wont fraud them

No sorry I'm talking credit card details here! As well as address, telephone and DOB. Should have made that clearer.

I've only used it once to get a CD which was released in a different country and had to wait two weeks for it to arrive when I thought it was a full month.

I was under the impression that most websites where you use your card have an in-browser application ran by the bank in which you secure the payment with a piece of information and a password.. It's called verisecure on Visa I think..

But that application stops anyone in their tracks if they seemingly have 'all' your bank information sooo I think you're completely safe.

I have used play before as well and they do some bloody cheap cds so I don't blame you!

Yeah they do have that. But I'm still not happy to have my stuff stored on there. :( I'll be cancelling my account and not using them again once the goods arrive I think. Shame because as you say they have some good prices. If someone gets my details from there though they have all they need to order something through mail order etc. I'm pretty sure to not have an option to remove your card details is against the data protection act infact.

Going back to 2005 I've made 152 purchases on play.com. Never had even the slightest hint of a problem. It's perfectly safe.

Some people don't like keeping their information on someone else's server, though. Which is perfectly sane thinking, as after every purchase I delete my information off the site. Sure, it's "safe" until someone attacks their server and steals the information.

He's just concerned because he likes to play it safe, and make sure that the site doesn't have not only the Credit Card number but other really important information which could lead to someone using his Credit Card easily.

I wouldn't ever use a site that stored all my information without letting me get rid of it at my disclosure. That's just bad business practice.

I don't live in the UK of course, so I'm not entirely sure what the entire law covers there. But, as far as I can tell it only:

  • Prohibits the selling/giving away of information without consent.

  • Incorrect information must be able to be corrected.

  • Can only store information for what is necessary.

Etc.

Nothing about having the right to delete information, just that the holder can't do anything with it without consent. But, I believe I'm not sure, if you agreed to the Terms and Conditions without reading it, they could potentially hold onto your information for as long as they want. Since you have to "agree" to it before you purchase anything (guessing, it is for most sites), so it could go anywhere.

Good thing you dont live in sweden then AW, cause here you basicly need to give out your Address and ID for everything :P

and as I said, if I have your name and your ID/address, i can get more details about you, legally throu the system. Its the same way newspapers can get information about people. Only reason they dont publish it is because you need to make a crime first.

Ah yeah I don't mind giving my details Samination. It's the holding on to them without letting me remove them I don't like! It's just not good practice IMO. If someone wants them to store their details fair enough but I think the choice should be there.

At our work we shred everones personaly details as soon as we're finished with them. Holding on to them will always be a security risk on some level.

Yeah that's my thinking exactly mate! Even if they aren't breaking the Data Protection Act it's bad business practice as you say. Why would you not let people remove their data? It will only annoy those customers that like to be a bit cautious.

Ah well. Goods are dispatched. I'll have to ring them and ask that they remove my account and they'll lose any future business from me. Madness.

that reminds me of the ordeal Facebook had a year ago about not removing account details. Especially dead persons accounts :P
