I'm surprised that no one has started a topic on this, so I'll start one!
The US was in the bid to host the 2022 world cup and lost to Qatar. There's a few of my friends on FB who are disappointed in this. It's gonna be extremely hot there (summer Qatar weather reaches 104 degress F) and there are extremely strict laws on alcohol consumption and purchase [which will make celebrating rather boring if you ask me :) ]
anyone here have thoughts, or opinions on the subject?

I haven't really been following any of the campaigns by any of the candidate countries - but I am seriously fcuked off that the World Cup isn't going to be in England in 2018.
USA had it in 94. That's pretty damn recent in terms of World Cup hosting. That said, you've got loads of cash and crazy-happy fans, so it'd be a good show. England's one and only time was 66. That is fcuking ages ago. I wanna see a fcuking World Cup in my country!!
Qatar is gonna be ridiculously hot, you're right.

i haven't really followed on it as well but i got interested now since we lost to qatar lol!
campaigning and bid process looks similar to the olympic bid process, and maybe FIFA voting members are doing the same as the IOC voting members, in that they are giving the opportunity for lesser developed countries and 1st-time countries to host the event, even if there is another country that is better prepared
the US has the stadiums in place (with at least 6 of the chosen stadiums having 80,000+ capacity), cities don't get as hot & humid as Qatar cities, and also FIFA 94 was one of the very few, if not the only world cup, that turned a profit.
Qatar plans on building all new stadiums with technology that will reduce temps in the stadium by 20 degrees less than outside temps. sounds great, but it is still a great concern if ever there is a malfunction. their lack of openmindedness also concerns me, mainly for the players.

I predict heatstrokes for the players in '22 :p You don't have to go to Qatar anyway, just watch it from home and enjoy all the alcohol you want. It's an islamic country and alcohol is forbidden in islam :p Interestingly, or maybe ironically, the word alcohol comes from Arabic, as do a lot of other words that start with "al-" :p

Got to remember, Qatar is a massively rich country and will continue to get richer. Apparantly Qatar will be spending 4 billion on the stadiums alone for the world cup.
Qatar actually are keen to make football big over there, you only have to look at the players that have played their club football in Qatar over the last few years...Gabriel Batistuta, Frank Lebeouf, Pep Guardiola, J-J Okocha, Christian Wilhelmsson, One of the De Boer brothers and a good few others.
The world cup over there will be like no other, and will be VERY hot. Expect a team like Brazil to win that world cup, England wont stand a chance in that heat. (its like how nobody can beat Bolivia at home because of the altitude, teams not used to the heat will really struggle).
As for the 2018 bid....England had the Euro's in 96 i guess. Russia have never had a world cup, and in terms of a country have come a long way. Football wise they have some very rich clubs over there like CSKA Moscow. They are now a more attractive country for players to play club football in too, look at how much they spend on players and the type of players they sign, alot of Brazilians and Argentinians play over there. They do seem to be growing as a football nation. People are moaning about how England didnt win, but we wernt even close, the Belgium/Holland and Spain/Portugal bids got more votes than we did, we came 4th. We got 2 votes out of 22. Not even close! I dont think we were ever in the running for it, but as per usual the media get hold of a story and make it out like its between us and the Russians, when in actual fact it was between Spain/Portugal and the Russians.
Also, our economy is dire at the moment. I dont think it would go down well with non-football fans if VAT goes up to 20% in January and then the government announce they will spend about a billion or so on facilities for the world cup lol. Having said that, I would have loved a World Cup over here, it would have been awesome! But lets be honest, any world cup in Europe is pretty local for us, its only like USA hosting a World Cup and the USA playing a game in New York and a fan having to travel from San Diego!

A bit disappointed it won't be going to England, as I'd have been able to get down and see a few games pretty easily. OK, we wouldn't qualify, but never mind - the WC is the perfect place to watch football as a neutral fan.
I've no problems with Russia getting the WC, but i do with Qatar. OK, it's a very rich country, but as a footballing nation, they are nothing. A nation of 1 million people is hosting the world cup, and most teams will have to stay in Dubai and Bahrain etc because the hosts won't have room for them - absolute joke. I suppose it's FIFA's way of trying to get the middle east into football by allowing all the states round that part to benefit.
