 The silver in a CD is Aluminium, which is not magnetic and therefore won't degrade.
 
 The only degradation will be from physical damage.

 |  Posted - 2011/02/26 :  18:11:45       Yeah i was going to say, it's tapes (in all their forms) that are magnetically written lol. Even now i find the whole concept ingenious, i don't know who anyone invented such a thing. But then science is not my strong point.

 i gave up on them many yrs back due to having some of them flaking. i have no clue what caused it b/c the only brand that was flaking on me was Sony for some reason.  and yea they are pretty sensitive to scratches

 |  Posted - 2011/02/27 :  02:09:34       Because the information has been laser etched onto the plastic of the cd, it can't be damaged. Your 10 year old cd's still work because the reflective coating hasn't been damaged (a real bitch) and the plastic hasn't been scratched so much that it deflects the laser.
 
 Your workstation still works because the laser hasn't moved or damaged and the reader still reads accurately.
