2008-present: "Upfront Hardcore" (Harder, darker, hard dance influenced stuff, minimal drops, hefty kicks, "electrocore" stuff

tbh I think those dates can be (neko)shuffed around a bit.

As far as I can tell it was (going by their prime time years)
91-95 Breakbeat Hardcore [The first hardcore born out of recycled loops and stuff] (Smart-E's, Prodigy, Johnny L, Slipmatt)
95-99 Happy Hardcore [4x4 Hardcore, with happy vocals and the bass stabs etc] (Dougal, Hixxy, Vibes, Antiscoial)
97-00 Trancecore [The early hardcore that was meant to sound more like trance, more needless of vocals] (UFO, Sharkey, Eclipse, Druid, Innovate)
01-05 UK Hardcore [Hardcore reborn. A renaissance. Tracks were fresher, while adopting more traditional trends] (Sy, Unkown, Styles, Breeze)
05-11 UK Hardcore [No clear change or turning point, but more styles have been tried. Moving away from simple piano lines and melodies] (Re-con, Squad-E, Styles, Breeze, Dougal, Gammer)

Its a stupid way to look at this. For example, breakbeat hardcore is still very prominent, and there were never really sudden changes.
The only thing I think needed to be pointed out, however, was the change from pre-millenia hardcore, to 2001 and its renaissance. The era of Trancey hardcore in Bonkers 7 almost killed this genre.

^^ I don't think bonkers 7 had anything to do with the quiet period - it was more a case of 'Bonkers 7 was a result of the quiet period' and not 'the quiet period was a result of bonkers 7' :)

back to the original post just tell them you listen to very fast dance music, but that you also enjoy dance music at a moderate speed, and that you arent too fond on quite slow dance music....but sometimes you like dance music that is quite fast, but not as fast as the really fast dance music - its much simpler that way :)

Ha ha, how funny that I've totally ignored this thread until now, and after having read the entire thing, I discover that the last post is one of the few I can relate to. Good timing.

Andy touched on this before:

If I'm talking to someone I don't really know and who is clearly not going to have any idea about Hardcore Techno - ha ha, just kidding, that termis ridiculous - clearly not going to have any idea about Hardcore, and they say "So what music are you into?" I always say "Chavy and unsociably fast dance music".

To my mates, well - they know I'm obsessed with it and have had to put up with it for years and years now, and discussing the accuracy of genre and sub-genre names in Hardcore isn't their favourite topic of conversation. Nor should it be anyone's for that matter.

That's it really. That covers everything. You're either talking to someone that knows about Hardcore - so they're going to understand once you give a few examples of tracks. Or you're talking to someone that doesn't know about it, and are probably never going to show an interest in it further down the line, so you just say "Dance music that's really fast".

i never said it was because of bonkers 7...

I was just saying that the music in Bonkers 7 was the kind of music that almsot killed the genre.. As in to say that 'tracey hardcore was the music that caused hardcore decline - for example, the music in bonkers 7'.

thats what i'm saying though - the style of music wasnt what put hardcore into its quiet patch - it was down to nobody producing it anymore

2003-today UK Hardcore. most of the stuff since 2003 has been labeled "upfront". as someone probably has mentioned (atleast on the other uk vs happy threads) Upfront stands for new stuff, not exactly a specific sound

Yeah in terms of telling people what I like I just say "I like Happy Hardcore" if they ask what it is I say it's very happy, cheesy and fast dance music. Normally though if I'm talking to someone about music I can go off on so many tangents, I love music as a whole so as long as people are talking about music I'll always have something to contribute whether it's classic rock, electronic music, jazz, heavy metal, rap..anything.

a lot of the kids/promoters/djs in my area call it Happycore and I can't stand it for some reason.
