I'm not a real pro, so when they answer, ignore my post :)
anyway, I have some decks, not that good, but I have of course done a lot of reserch for my next decks, and just generally listend to be people on this board.
Obvious things - get a *good* mixer that you wont have to sell after like 5 mins of usage. Likewise, buy good headphones and decks :)
Technics are (supposdily - I don't have any but I'm going from a lot of other people exp to say the least :)) the industry standard deck, and I think if you look hard enough you may be able to find them second hand for resnoble prices on ebay :)
If you need new... numark apparntly have bad reputation for mid range decks, I don't know to be honest. My friend has some mid range gemini's and they are pretty good.
Just make sure you buy stuff that will last, so u don't have to spend a huge amount later replacing all your stuff when you realise it was a mistake :)

if you can go to a shop and ask them face to face, try to get an independant one too.
with the decks get directs, you will for this type of money, ones you might be able to look at are the numark tt200, gemini pt2100 and stanton str8-60, i would say these are the best for the money
as for the mixer get the best you can, berhinger make good cheap mixers, but there are also vestax 002 and 003, if you can try to stay away from the numark or gemini cheap mixers, as there are people who dont like them at all (i like the numark ones but not the gemini but know people who like the bemini but hate the numark)
try going for a package deal it will save you money, and should give you what you want for the first set of decks at around that price.

I know its out of your price range but it'd be worth saving up for some Technics 1200's, you can get a package for £700 and the dex's would never need replacing!

go for a dj turntable, its the only type to get and in general they have the same design for the feet, which have been besigned to be stable, as for the gemini xl500 (which i hate), why when you can get gemini 2100 which are better but still in your budget?

ive had a pair of numark tt-1910's for just over 2years now, i also got with them the bludog 2 mixer wich is shite and i have just finally got around to replacing it - but seriously, my numarks have been good to me, ive mixed well on them for 2 years, ok so they are no longer the strength they used to be and i really should get technics - but i dont have the technics money - so to sum up, save up that little bit extra for technics - cos trust me - it will be worth it and u wont have to buy a new pair every 2 years (like im gonna have to do soon)

look, check you're local ad's for second hand technics (if you are low on cash) as they will allways be solid!
and wont break down and last forever blah blah blah...
if you buy a set of belt drives, numark ones or something you will want to upgrade! and when you sell them you wont get alot of money for them, so i say get technics or vestax
