Some interesting posts here.
I personally related to Warnman's the most. I've felt like that for a few years now.
A telling example. It's going to sound like a completely bull-shit story, but it's 100% true. In early December - either the 6th or 7th - I was flying from Saigon to Bangkok. The flight was delayed for about an hour and a half. At the gate, they made an announcement saying the inbound plane (i.e. ours) had had a small technical fault before leaving Bangkok, but it was enroute and all was fine. So, we eventually get on the plane. The guy to my left was clearly terrified of flying. Anyways, start accelerating down the runway. Had been going for quite a while - you know that moment where you're thinking "is this actually going to take off?" - then with no warning whatsoever, there was the most violent deceleration, everyone was flung forward into the seat in front. People were screaming, the noise of the engines was fcuking insane. After about two seconds, the plane started shuddering, as if it was skidding across grass or gravel. The plane was just shuddering violently. I guess it lasted for maybe 15 seconds. I found myself, during and the minutes after this incident, just smiling as I was still semi-reading the book I had in front of me. I didn't feel remotely scared. Was fcuking weird. The plane eventually went back to the gate, no explanation, had to get off, and was delayed for 26 hours. Grim. lol.
But yeah. A strange experience. It wasn't just a little speed up, slow down situation. It was fcuking borderline "That could have been a totally savage way to die" incident. Couldn't have been much runway left. Was pitch black, so couldn't really see anything out the window.
So yeah. I'm not suicidal. But in terms of feeling like I'd be missing out on anything if I were to die today - I don't feel that. The obvious pain to friends and family is always an unpleasant thought. The only element of death that scares me is losing family and friends to it. Them dying, not me.
