got a new job at a new liquor store, the owner also owns a nightclub, we got talking about DJing and now i have a meeting with the club's manager for a possible residency if he likes me and the music i choose.
the downside is i have to compromise my artistic integrity and play dubstep/electro, but it could result in getting paid money which is something i have never gotten for playing HHC.
the club isn't a total dive, stainless steel crap, mirrors lasers and all that...
how bittersweet this is!! but i need money more than i need to play hhc for people that probably don't like it.
never djed in a club before, any tips people?

also, i know most of you are not from canada, but if i get asked for what i want to get paid, any ideas?
my bro was telling me to ask for $100 canadian... which would be like 50 pounds-ish for what i'm hoping wouldn't be for more than an hour and a half time slot.
is that too high, too low? i am bringing all my gear basically, minus speakers. i think that's fair to start with. definitely not doing this for the cool points, really hoping the manager isn't thinking i'll do this for free.

That ain't very much if you ask me, ask 100 and taxi payed because you have to bring your own gear. Make sure your mixes sound really AWESOME and don't let him start this "relationship" with him being the boss- already get some respect from the start :)
Now of course it also depends what kind of club that is, so maybe 50 plus taxi is okay aswell. You can work your way up then :) Good luck dude

anyway a DJ is a DJ regardless of what genre u play... the more diverse u are the better... u never know... u maybe able to drop a core tune??

Is the club near you and what sort of gear are we talking here? 50 sounds reasonable for just 1hr-1.5hr slot DEPENDING on them factors. Try and get a figure from them first though, you may end up going in under what he was going to pay!
To be fair mate just take it as a job and don't worry about artist integrity. Easy money and I bet it's more fun than most jobs!

What you could do aswell is find other DJs who played there and ask them how much they got paid :P But I'm not sure if it's a good idea - they might go to the owner and tell him haha. And they might already have a big "name"...

You love your liquor stors eh.
Anyway congrats. Don't worry about what you have to play, an opportunity is an opportunity and you should take it. If you get payed for it to then you definately should be taking it. If you don't play there someone else will anyway and they might just be worse.

You don't compromise your integrity solely by playing a different genre ;p If you're playing a genre you don't want to play, however, you are a sellout. I'd take the job personally, but then again I quite like dubstep and electro HOUSE. If you take the job it might even grow on you, so I'd say go for it.

I've played pop music I can't stand at parties before lol. If that makes me a sell out so be it. 250 quid for 5 hours work... YES PLEASE!

Of course, I'd take those 250quid too. Not saying I care about selloutness(?), I was just discussing my definition ;p

Seems a bit cheap - I wont turn up for anything less than 150 quid if its a nightclub - and only then if its last minute and I'm not booked elsewhere. Regards the music you have to play to the crowd, if you find something they enjoy stick with it unless you are on comission with the drink sales as well. If they do drink commision it's wise to watch how many people have a drink in their hands, and if its not many then drop a rubbish track in - they will leave the dancefloor and head straight to the bar then come back as soon as your next decent track is playing. (and yes this happens more often than people think and no I don't agree with having to do that :P)
