I've researched this quite a bit and seem to be leaning towards a plasma.
I mean, in LCD (and LEDs) favour, they're apparently less reflective, can double as a computer monitor (which i wont do anyway but it's worth mentioning), they don't run as hot or use as much electricity, they're thinner and lighter...
But on the other hand, Plasmas have better contrast (deeper blacks) don't have as much of a problem with screen refresh rate (due to the nature of their build) which makes them much better for gaming and blu ray, and they're much cheaper around the 40 inch range... Which is what i want.
But my friends that have LCDs or LEDs are adamant that i'd be making the wrong decision by buying a Plasma...
So does anyone actually know about this shit that can inform me?

You're pretty much spot on there mate. LED TV'S are probably the future but i'd still go for plasma overall - much better than LCD for contrast and fast moving pictures etc...as long as you can live with yourself for the extra power usage.

I've had my current plasma tv for at least 4-5 years and play a LOT of games, my screen remains as clear as the day i bought it.

You could have great fun burning dodgy images into peoples plasma tvs while they are on holiday. :D How long does it take roughly? I'm pretty sure you have to have the image up on screen for a lot longer than the average person would play a game for at a time.

Exactly mate. Anybody daft enough to pause a game then leave their tv on for the many hours it'd take deserves everything they get!

I use a projector for movies. Wouldn't have it any other way TBH. Though i am thinking of getting a 27" LCD or LED computer display. Although it would have slightly smaller resolution (1920x1200 -> 1920x1080), the extra 3" would make it more pleasant to watch.

Actually a proper LED tv has the best contrast, but plasma is definitely still a viable option :)

The one im getting has a 5 star energy rating... which is quite good so im not THAT concerned about it. I can't possibly run it that much... it'll be for a few hours a day MAX.

That's an old problem. Nowdays they all have a screen shaking thing (i forget the name of it) that slightly (not visibly, we're talking a pixel at a time) moves the screen to the left and right and up and down so that there are inherently no static images anymore.

I've been researching this for about a month, all over the internet and asking sales people and people who install tvs and i've never heard of this. It's partly because of the way it's lit - it just doesn't do the same process. When you look at the contrast rations in the technical specs of the tvs, you can even see that plasmas are significantly better.

Andy, cos your in Australia I can probably help, your bringing out the TV salesman in me (although I left the industry 8 months ago).
Plasma Pros:
Price. Size for dollar is much better with Plasma.
Contrast. Generally better with Plasma
Motion. Great on all plasmas, don't need to watch the Hz
Cons:
Reflection. Don't anywhere window will reflect, and don't use indoor lights.
Screen burn. Mostly not an issue, but as someone said some cheap ones have screen burn. Also (and they may have changed this in the most recent models since I left), LG's seemed to have screen burn. Also Panasonic 3d ones screen burned a bit.
LCD/LED Pros:
Non reflective (usually). Some do reflect, check the screen in store, some like a glossy finish to look nice but they will reflect like a plasma.
No screen burn.
More range. Manufacturers are moving away from Plasma, so there is more variety in LCDs. One example is Sony no longer make Plasmas (and imo Sony is the top brand).
Cons:
Price.
Extra cost for decent motion. DON'T get a 50Hz if you want to gain. 100Hz is fine for gaming, the human eye only processes about 80Hz at best so anything over that is fine, but obviously 100Hz costs more than 50.
My advice (based on older models but I wouldn't say much has changed). If cash is an issue, look at a Panasonic Full HD Plasma, but make sure the room is dark and you aren't going to have any lights on when watching. If you have a bit of spare cash, or the size you want fits into the price bracket, Sony Full HD 100Hz+ LCD or LED. I actually don't see much value in LED over LCD, in fact my TV is a Sony 100Hz LCD and is perfect for gaming (albiet I got an awesome price as I sold it to myself :P). Avoid Samsung (both LCD/LED or Plasma) like the plague, the TVs have stunning picture, however they also had the highest return rate.

The plasma i want to get is a 42' panasonic viera... from what i've heard panasonic is pretty good with plasmas. The only thing stopping me from buying one right now is the reflection.
On the other hand, the lcds im looking at are all lesser known brands like TEAC or SONIQ... which i understand wont be as good but i have a budget of around 700.

Reflection or no reflection if you want a 42" for around the $700 mark a Pana Plasma is the best way to go. Just try and keep the room dark and avoid turning lights on. If you have a window in the room, try and place the TV directly in front of it rather than away from it to reduce glare. And Panasonic is the best for Plasma. The only upside I can se of getting a Soniq or a Teac or the like is that in less than a year when it breaks and you get your money back you can save up a bit more towards a better brand :P. But seriously, Panasonic Plasma is the way to go, and you should be able to get a Full HD for that money.
