I graduate with my B.S. in May 2012, and I am highly considering looking at a teacher position overseas. My country of interest is the UK, but how big of an adjustment would it be for me coming from the States? To anyone who can offer an open-minded response, are there any gay rights (civil unions, domestic partnership, etc.) within the UK, or any other European country for that matter? Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has any information on New Zeland, that would be great as well. Please try to refrain from biased answering, and try to give a whole-rounded input.

Two questions:

What languages do you know.
What subjects do you excel in/got a degree in.

Why not go to a non-English speaking country to teach English?

this.

don't think you'll have much luck finding a job teaching english in an english speaking country. I have a couple friends that got jobs pretty quickly teaching english in Japan.

pretty much. you're extremely limited in what countries you can work for b/c of a lack of a second language. plus i'm not sure but your degree is only guaranteed to work in the US. every country is different and probably not willing to accept you b/c of you're a US graduate, unless you enter some kind of int'l teacher program. but then going back to what I said before, very limited in what countries you can teach.

I have a feeling you have more rights as a gay in the uk than the USA - we've had civel partnerships for a lot lot longer than the US at least

and homosexuals have been allowed in our armys since 1999 (almost 11 years now)
gay couples have been able to adopt childrens since 2002, and marry into cival partnerships since 2005 - the current govenment are now looking into it so that there can be true gay marriage, which would be no different than current marriage between a man and a women (and get married in a church!)

more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_the_United_Kingdom

being gay is far more acceptable here in the UK - as is listening to dance music ;)

I was thinking this as well.

Warped, I'd make sure I speak to someone that's done exactly what you're considering, already. Find someone that's a US native but has been teaching in the UK, Europe or Australasia or whatever. I think the adjustment would be quite big. Teaching a younger age (which I think is what you've said you'd be doing) would help.

As others have suggested, teaching in a non-English speaking language is definitely a viable option. A truly awesome way to experience a totally different culture whilst getting paid as well.

I knew a lot of guys that were teaching when I was in Saigon. They were getting something like $1,500 - $2,000 (US) a month. You can't spend that much money in Saigon a month lol. But that's just an example - there are some awesome places you could go, where job opportunities are really quite abundant. A year or so of that, then your CV is looking even stronger if you do want to be a bit more conventional and work over here.

Dunno if any of that helps :-/

Bingo, I have a friend who has taught English in China and he's now doing the same in the Czech Republic.

P.S - Triquatra seems to know a fair bit about all this gay stuff, are you a Gay lawyer in your spare time?

This is a hot topic here ATM. Here gay couples can "register" their partnership, which means exactly like marriage, except for adoption. Is there any surveys how it has gone there? Any complications with the law? I've never really had an opinion on the matter myself. The thing i puzzle is how a kid grows up in a family like that. Though i am strictly against church marriages for gays (a law for it, that is), IMHO the decision is something that the church should make themselves. But since the evangelic lutheran church of finland is considered a "state religion" (which it isnt), some want to dictate its decisions by law.

I don't want to teach English...I want to teach regular elementary school. I got the ESOL endorsement to help the students who are from immigrant families.
