I have a quick question, well, perhaps not quick..we shall see
when it comes to buying happy hardcore on mp3 (1994 - 2000) how do you know before hand if what you're buying is actually from the DAT...and not just some vinylrip which one could have done in their bedroom? because the quality on the sample mp3s is always reduced...so how would you tell?
eventually I'll be getting CD decks to go with my vinyl...and this is one of the larger questions i have..

You would struggle if you're listening to some 64/96kbps clip I'm afraid mate but not all sites have shit preview quality. I don't think there is much stuff about from that era that isn't vinyl rips though is there!? Better off tracking down some un-mixed CD's maybe.

yeah, I'm all over those older dj friendly cds! hehe
if thats the case - that the majority of it is vinyl rips, then I might as well just keep on buying vinyl!
are there any labels out there that people know of from 94-2000 that have released stuff digitally that are definitely not vinyl rips?

NextGen & Blatant beats have stated that their labels don't have vinyl rips. While I don't hear a difference in quality between older tracks and newer tracks, there is a huge difference in volume between the two. I've purchased old stuff from JAL and there doesn't seem to be much difference either with the exception of the volume thing. Older tracks tend to be lower in volume for some reason. It is noticeable.

If you are buying from the label itself then it's not going to be a rip (you would have thought anyway).

I should think a lot of DAT tapes have been lost and tbh people may not even have the equipment to transfer the files from them these days! Perhaps I'm wrong and everyone took lots of lovely backups when the tech moved forward but I imagine that isn't the case for a lot of the stuff. ;)
Either way i'm just keeping my vinyl for my 90's fix! Playing a 90's Happy Hardcore set in Northampton on Friday actually, good times :D

That's mainly down to modern mastering techniques and the whole loudness war thing. In otherwords everything is squashed to shit these days until every last bit of dynamic range hs been squeezed out of it. :P

+1.
*edit* I've spoken to a few guys about this before. Some still have their DATS, whether for keep-sakes or because they're too lazy to do anything with them ;) I know I wouldn't mind being let loose with some of the stuff that Bunter has (or so I've heard.....)
I'm also guessing that vinyl rips are adjusted so that the BPM is an integer...so that blows my idea of checking the BPM with Ableton or suchlike out of the water. :(

I ripped my own vinyl I couldn't buy digitally to MP3 because I like using CDJs and like playing old skool happy hardcore. As people have said, JAL is good; so is next gen/blatant beats. Audio Warfare is right, loads and loads of DAT tapes have been lost, I get this answer a lot when I ask producers about digitally releasing their old tracks. The old DJ friendly unmixed CDs from around 1997ish are a godsend, also don't forget that Evolution's back catalogue is slowly coming out also I think even trackitdown has the odd old skool track here and there.
My suggestion for the odd tracks with no release would be get a vinyl care-kit and use audacity to rip the vinyls as cleanly as possible. Also might sound like a weird thing to mention but keep all other running processes to a minimum, your CPU getting warm can cause some very slight skips or jumps in the recording; I sadly found this out after ripping a bunch of vinyl and not re-listening until I had done them all and about 70% of them were skipping and so on, I did have a bit of a heat issue on my last laptop though.
It's not a perfect solution but some tracks you will not get any other way, I think as long as the quality isn't too low and everything is at a relatively similar volume you should be fine playing them out as long as you don't mix into any 320 kbps upfront mp3s or something but I think that'd sound odd even if they were both perfect quality just because of the difference in instruments, structure etc.
Er, also check imo which offers a fair amount of older tracks, many of which are better quality than bad vinyl rips; oh and also soundcloud...sometimes producers release their full length old tracks in 320kbps for free...notable example being UFO who posted Deep Inside a few months ago...I love that track and was soooo happy to get a clean version as there was nothing in mint condition on discogs at the time

Bring back beats 24/7! :( </3
*another edit*, wouldn't harm to ask the artist or label directly - if you can get hold of them. I know of one track, which I cannot say who it was from (put it this way...he retired and it would have caused a lot of interest!!!) which was all set to make an appearance on an aborted project last year. Slipmatt & Bunter are releasing an oldskool album imminently, and I'm pretty sure all the tracks on there are taken initially from the original source. Just ask about fella.
UK Dance are going digital (at ****ING LAST), KF did, and I'm sure others will follow suit. Seriously, I need my fix of Fade & Bananaman / Jhal. There's plenty more but I'm too tired to think right now :(

Best news ever!!
EDIT: also DNA told me a lot of his DAT tapes and dubplates etc. had been destroyed so a lot of his stuff that didn't hit a major label isn't going to get a digital release sadly.

Yeah there is a fair few tracks that are easily accessible if you ask someone who has them (since he gave them away via this site).
Which track was it?
