Something to think about: Beatport.com used to use "Hardcore Techno" for all Happy Hardcore, UK Hardcore and Gabber Releases! Now it uses "Hard Techno" for Hard Dance, Tech Dance, Hardcore, UK Hardcore and Gabber.

Beatport doesn't seem to care about anything that isn't house, trance or progressive. I love beatport's layout but it favours those genres far too much. Every time I listen to the beatport top 10 of psytrance for example it favours the progressive psy stuff even when there's so much great full-on stuff coming out, they seem to market exclusively to the club crowd.

ahhh that explains that, i figured it must just be that they don't have any interest in marketing those particular genres

Because you said that i went and checked out the top 10 since that's exactly the kind of Psy Trance i would be looking for. Sadly it seems that a good portion of it has gone the way of Trance etc! Number 10 is truly an epic Psytrance tune. As good as Psytrance gets really from any era.

Zen Mechanics = good quality music, but they've fallen prey to the progressive bug too and have dropped about 10bpm slower than I'd prefer (check out their Holy Cities CD). Really I like 'psytrance' but it's a similar situation to hardcore for me - ever since I rediscovered Goa it's just much much much better than Psy and I find it hard to go back. Goa has such a raw natural earthly quality to it whereas Psytrance kind of blasts you with slick, polished production and all kinds of weird effects. I still love psy, particularly full-on stuff but my heart is in Goa, it just feels right - melodies layered over melodies that fade in and out; everything about it is so natural, the way your brain just hops on one of these melodies and rides it all the way, the way that they wash across the music on and off and on and off like waves on a beach and incorporate such raw sounds straight from jungles or fields or deserts..the beat is always so subtle too, it's just a metronome really to help you dance in time and in rhythm so you can travel with the music. I find all the progressive psy stuff to be too club-oriented for my liking, I don't feel that being in a club is the correct way to experience psychedelic trance music.

Psy has always been progressive, maybe your idea of 'Progressive' is different from what it actually means. If you are referring to the stuff that sounds like all this really commercial Housy stuff then yes that stuff is truly awful and is what i meant. Progressive music by it's very nature though does not fit in with commercialism.

Yeah, I understand both uses of the word but I figured most people would understand progressive similarly to how they would understand progressive house etc. Kids are going really mad for the clubby progressive stuff at the moment, trance and house. I've got nothing against it and some of it I do really like but it always baffles me they would choose to like that instead of the more fast paced rave-y stuff that's out there.
And that is a great goa tune, couple of my all time favorites would have to be these:

Really?
I wouldn't compare it to the dog shit on the feet of The Shen. But that's just me.
Given that most Psytrance usually sounds roughly the same yes. What do you consider to be good? I don't really listen to the genre to be honest so if there is better stuff then i don't hear it (stuff that's actually new that is).

Infected Mushroom were good (They've sold out big time now, and you won't hear me use that phrase often) but stuff like The Shen, Bombat etc. all great tracks but not exactly Psytrance for me because they feel more like *songs* rather than psychedelic trance tracks for dancing to at a rave. Listening music as opposed to dancing music I suppose. Juno Reactor went a similar way to Infected Mushroom in that they stopped doing dancefloor stuff and went for individual productions instead, and in my opinion Juno Reactor > Infected Mushroom. Juno Reactor's Labyrinth album is one of the best things I have ever heard from any genre ever.

You won't here me say sold out either. I prefer "gone ****ing terrible". But yes, their earlier stuff, the shen and a few others I can't remember the names of. I would definitely consider their earlier stuff danceable. They have done some great listening stuff as week. Id put shakawkaw in that list. I'll make a point of checking out those reactor guys.

Well Infected Mushroom have now gone dubstep sadly, also they offended a massive part of the psytrance scene when they said they didn't like being hugged by smelly hippies and didn't really like playing out in the bush and so on. Might seem reasonable to us from the Hardcore scene but in the psy scene that's such a huge insult considering those 'smelly hippies' are the ones that would travel for thousands of miles into the wilderness and camp out there just to support Infected Mushroom's performances and hear them play. I used to love Infected Mushroom but I think they're arseholes now and their current music isn't even good enough to redeem their shitty attitude.
If you like the kind of organic Infected Mushroom sound it might be worth checking out forest psy as a genre, some of it is very heavy and repetitive and swamp-like but the kind of ethereal mysterious stuff is fantastic.
