Prince Of Darkness Lost Soul
With under two months until I Love Hard Beats rocks London with its first free party, the HBC are getting very, very excited; even more so after speaking to the master of the dark side, Lost Soul. Ten years into what has been a pretty exciting musical existence, he has a couple of album projects under his belt, as well as having his first major production Dark Side Of The Moon played by the legendary John Peel. Warped sounds, innovative concepts and epic breakdowns characterise his unmistakable style.
With a savage catalogue of relentless, energy infused slammers to pick from this man is going to take the roof off the Lightbox so you better be there to get a one way ticket to purgatory. Lets see what the infamous gurn champion has to say in the run up to the event:
As you are now officially one of the freeform old boys, take us back to how it all started for you?

Back in 2001 I was writing trance and hardcore in Fruityloops. I happened to upload one of my tracks to MP3.com and it was noticed by Kevin Energy. He got in touch and I went to London for a couple of days to recreate it in K-Complex's studio, and it was released sometime in 2002. At the time I didn't really know anything about freeform. I was aware of it, but it didn't actually occur to me I was writing it when I made the track that was picked up. After getting my first track signed to NuEnergy I decided to check it out a lot more, and really started getting into it.
With an arsenal of tracks under your belt, what are your personal favourites and why?
These are my favourites, I can't really explain why without basically describing the tracks themselves:
Warlock
Deep Space
Axiomatic System
Ragnarok
Outta My Brain
Zombie With A Chainsaw
Sweet choices! Who have been your favourite artists to collaborate with and is there anyone you'd like to write with in the future?
I do very few collaborations and I much prefer writing by myself. These days I take weeks to make one track, and doing that as a collaboration doesn't work very well. However, I've definitely enjoyed the collaborations I have done as they've been with excellent producers, so they were a rewarding experience. As for the future, I'm staying quiet about that for the moment!
What is it about the dark side of freeform that inspires you?

I've often leaned more towards the dark side simply because few other people seemed to be representing it, partly to provide balance but also because doing something few other people are doing makes you stand out more. The main reason would be because I'd get bored just making euphoric tracks. I like euphoric but I also like contrast. I've always liked combining elements of different types in a track so you get a full spectrum of emotion, rather than just one.
Your tracks are renowned for their dark, mind blowing intensity, how do you do it?
A lot of my tracks are labelled dark simply as they contain dark elements, even if they have euphoric elements as well. Sometimes parts in my tracks are labelled dark because they aren't euphoric, even if they aren't really dark, for example if they're psychedelic or driving.
I think my tip for making tracks would be to make sure your track has a unique idea. Something that gives it a character no other track has. Also, take your time and don't let something be just OK. If all the elements in your track are just OK, delete them and replace them with something better. If they aren't really doing much for you now, they won't for anyone else.
What is the highlight of your music making career to date?

I have two that come to mind. The first is when John Peel played Dark Side Of The Moon on Radio One. The second would be the CD on Hardcore Underground 4 that I did with Oli G. We spent a lot of time on it, and I was really proud of the result.
What treats does your studio have waiting to unleash on us?
I've got the beginnings of a freeform track on the go. It's got the most psychedelic noise I've created to date. I've also got a psytrance collaboration with Adam Ephexis to finish at some point.
What can we expect from your b2b with Endemic and your psy trance set at ILHBs?
The unexpected.
Out of the following three track names, which would be your favourite and why?
* Epic Darkness
* Blacker than black
* Very, very dark
Epic Darkness. Firstly because it represents a contrast of sounds, and secondly because the others are even more terrible.
Can that be the name of your next creation?
We'll see. (No.)

Where would be your favourite place to stroke walls?
Possibly Hidden, all the Freeformations there were amazing. I like the staircases all over the place going to different bits of the club.
Thumpas question: If you could put anyone from history through a table, who would it be and why?
Hitler before he invaded Poland. To stop World War Two, and therefore to prevent 'Allo 'Allo from being created.

Morris messiness: Good evening Sir. I am planning a Christmas dinner for the Incestazoid Corporation employees and have hit a stumbling block in terms of the fish dish. The wearing of pants is obligatory so crabs are off the menu, Lemon and Dover Sole are sooooooo 2001 and I refuse to eat anything I can't imagine sleeping with. I ask you this... What does Lost Sole taste like and could you suggest a recipe?
No one knows what it tastes like because as soon as anyone catches one, they immediately can't find it. This is what gives it its name, that and the fact that it's a type of sole. It is however the least fattening of all fish, at zero calories, and goes well with any food that already tastes nice. The best (and cheapest) recipe is to serve it by itself, and hope the old emperor's new clothes trick actually works.
By Dark Angel (with a little bit of help from Morris and Thumpa!)
