Made a last minute decision to go to this with one of my mates. If anyone else is going and fancies meeting up for a cheeky pint before hand, let me know :-)

Here's the event thread for it on here: http://www.happyhardcore.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=57283

And here's the facefcuk group: http://www.facebook.com/events/251536171590786/

My review:

Had an AWESOME night on Saturday at this event. My mate called me on Thursday to say he couldn't make it, and since my money situation isn't great, I decided I wasn't going to go. Then on Saturday night, about 9pm I thought "Fcuk it! Let's do it!" and decided to go on my own. Didn't get there until gone midnight, so missed the first couple of sets - which is a shame.

It's the first time I've been in any kind of condition to remember anything since the development of the newer sounding stuff - all the controversial stuff that everyone's been debating about lately.

Eufeion's set with Kandie Rush had quite a lot of it in. It was all still 4x4 stuff, but just those minimal drops. It was mixed in with some really powerful vocal tunes that sounded incredible as well.

Breeze was on at 2. Now, I don't want to get in to a big full blown repeat argument, so I'll just try to be objective and non-provoking. I personally hated it, and went for a few smokes - but the smoking area was tiny and absolutely packed so they were basically making you go in if you weren't actually smoking. I therefore was in the room for most of his set. There was a mixed reaction on the dancefloor. There were a lot of people at the front who really seemed to be enjoying it. Then a lot of people around the edge of the dancefloor seemed to be a little unsure and not really into it. It has really reinforced my "You can't really call that Hardcore" view. There just was hardly any element of Hardcore there at all. Not only the absence of a consistent beat, but the menacing sounds and tones. Hardly any vocals. At least with the minimal stuff, the beat still exists and on a big sound system you can still bop away to it. So that was that.

Styles was on immediately after. After Breeze's I was thinking "Mmm, this could potentially go the same way". But Jesus Christ I was totally wrong. It was really ****ing special. The first half was the newer sounding stuff technically, but Styles just played much more uplifting versions of these tracks. Like, same basic structure tracks really that Breeze was playing, but with uplifting vocals and nice pianos and all that cheesy crap that I love. So although it wasn't what I've now started referring to as "Traditional Hardcore", it wasn't un-enjoyable - not by any stretch of the imagination. I would have preferred it to have an ever-present beat but it was still really, really good fun. Now, the second part of his set was fcuking magnificent. It all started getting incredible when they did an MC Junior tribute and he whacked on the original Pretty Green Eyes. Amazing, amazing vibes. I'm really frustrated because I can't remember what any of the other tunes were in this period of the set - I was quite pissed by now. Shame because there were some fcuking classics. Oh, the original Heartbeats I think? But man, everyone was right into it. He also played You & I, obviously, and that went down seriously fcuking well. Was signing my heart out. And at some point near the end he played the new Drumstep version of Save Me. I think, but can't be totally sure, that he sort of played part of the original and then played the Drumstep verion? Or he'd made a specific edit of the two for his current sets whilst he's trying it out? Maybe it was just the Drumstep version and I was pissed and just didn't recognise it and am now over-thinking it? Who knows, ha ha! But the reaction wasn't amazing really. Some people looked properly confused. But, overall, a really, really, really good set. Big up to the man.

Vibes was on after that. Played some cool stuff. Had a photo with him. Really nice bloke.

Then Sc@r was on at like 5 I think. Fcuking HELL - what a truly amazing set. I was really quite pissed by now, so I was really enthusiastic anyway - but the set was just out of this world good! Just an hour of INCREDIBLE Hardcore. Could well be one of the best sets I'v ever seen/raved to. So so good. There was a bit of a delay with Bunter and Slipmatt (who were doing the closing set) so she improvised with some Gabber and it was fcuking awesome. Ahh man, I enjoyed it so much! Thinking back as I'm typing now - just can't stop smiling! I'd had a quick chat with her before she went on because she was raving along with everyone else, and she said a few words to me after her set as she made her way back across the dancefloor. Can't remember what she said specifically (wankered by now) but the gesture was really sweet. She is now one of my favourite people to see - and I'm gonna make a point of going to as many events that she is at as possible! It does help that she's a bit of a sauce-pot as well. Little minx.

Bunter & Slipmatt were on next and I can't really remember the tracks. I went to go get a beer about half way through their set (so, about 6.30ish) but as I made my way to the bar I realised how shit-faced I was and decided to spontaneously get my coat and go home! Met up with my mates who were raving at a different event down the road. One of them is t-total and the other is a mess-head like me, so we did actually end up getting another couple of beers on the way home! Awful business! Ha ha!

Couple of other things worth mentioing: the smoking machine got stuck on in the old skool room for fcuking ages. We're talking like an hour-plus here! It was RIDICULOUS. Quite funny walking through it (which you had to do to get drinks or to smoke) though. It was so thick and dense, you couldn't see anything, just smoke - then some pilled up raver would emerge out of the mist as they were dancing around, and then disappear out of view again. It was so funny. Must have been terrifying for some people who were properly pilled up!

MASSIVE shout to Ray and his brother Dave who I spent a lot of the time with on the dance floor. Really, really sweet guys - and was nice to have 'em around because it was my first solo raving experience. Must try and look them up, because I left without saying goodbye when I did my spontaneous exit.

And another huge shout to this Russian guy who was fcuking HAVING IT with me on the floor for one of the sets (forget which). We were both really going for it. Proper enjoyable man.

So yeah, that's my long, long review of the night. Overall a massive success, as an event and I hope they do another London one soon. Maybe a different venue though because it's not that great. The old skool people must have been totally pissed off with people walking through their dance floor every time they wanted to get a beer or smoke. Just a constant stream of people. Well irritating if you're trying to get down!

Last word: if anyone is ever debating about going to an event, and are unsure whether to go on your own if there's no one else to go with you - just do it! You won't regret it. Hardcore ravers are obviously known for being safe people, and you soon get stuck in. I know a lot of you guys already do this - or even go to different countries to rave solo! - but there might be some people out there not sure about it - and if they've made it to the end of my ultra-long (and probably ultra-boring) post, this just might help them take the plunge if they were skeptical!

bah, wish it was easier to get to these things for me so I could do more spur of the moment stuff. for me it takes about a months worth of planning as to get out of cumbria I have to try and get advance tickets on the train, so you actually have to see the event coming, and try and predict if there are going to be any bigger or better events on at the time that might be more worth going to.

sounds like you had a great time though mate! :)

Yeah, that must suck cock man - seriously limited travel links up there.

I'm quite lucky, in a way, living where I do. It's an hour into London, and then you can get basically anywhere quite easily. It's just the most raves seem to be like Leicester, Derby, Northampton etc. There's hardly any actually in London. which is why Bunter decided to put this one on, I think.

And yeah, I had a fcuking amazing time man. Really, really enjoyed myself.

Indeedy. I always try & keep an eye on the London based events, especially if Billy Bunter is behind them because he knows exactly what the ravers want imo.
