I had my first gig a few weeks ago, playing hardcore nonetheless (never thought I'd get to play hardcore out here) and it was actually an all hardcore night, very fun time. Apparently a lot more people around here like hardcore then I initially realized and I'm looking to start the scene up again. Happy hardcore was very popular here in the 90s (I suppose it was in a lot of places, I was born in 1993 so I really wouldn't know) but as you all know it sadly faded out but it's been coming back lately, albeit with a new sound. I live in Arkansas but a friend of mine in Tulsa, Oklahoma (only a two hour drive away) has been throwing some hardcore/hardstyle/hard dance "rave-like shows" as he put it and apparently they've been doing well. He said he's looking to reach out to the Arkansas crowd and sorta bridge the two scenes together considering how close my area and his are. I was asked to play at a show in Tulsa (I don't have any details yet) and I'm quite excited about this as I'm getting to play hardcore at a show.

My question is though, how would I get the scene going in my area? Do I just get with like minded people (DJs, promoters, etc.) and just start planning events or what? I have no idea how I'd go about doing this as I'd love to see the scene grow here again and start having raves and stuff once again.

Do exactly what you said, find some like minded people. Get some advice off your friend who has put events on before and find some like minded people in your area and put a bit of money together and do the same. Get some flyers printed to advertise the event and pass them out at universities, colleges, public noticeboards, independant record stores and anywhere else young people might see it.

Come up with a memorable name for your event and always have the event using that name in future that way you can build a reputation and word of mouth can spread if people have had a good night.
At your first event you may get potential DJs hand demos in or like-minded people keen to get involved, the more hands you have to help the bigger a success the event can be.
Maybe even put on your flyers that potential DJs for future events can hand a demo cd in on the night!

Charge a small fee for entry, nothing too steep, see what a club usually charges in your area and undercut their price, afterall you are a brand new event and alot of people may not know what to expect.
Get a club in a decent location, close to public transport, maybe a train station or bus terminal close by.
Expense-wise you will probably have to pay money to the nightclub owner to allow you to use their venue and they will take all the bar sales, negotiate a deal so that you can take all the entry fee if you get so many people through the door, if you get less than that maybe the club owner will want a cut of your entry fee too (he wont want to lose money). Getting flyers printed is an expense and maybe even hire a local DJ, do you have any DJs in Arkansas who are quite well known or respected among young people? Not necessarily a hardcore DJ, maybe he plays house or trance. Book him for the event, that way its a respectable name on your flyer, sure his style may not in-keep with hardcore but if its EDM then chances are some people will enjoy both and you will also draw a bigger crowd in. Maybe put the established DJ on at the end of the night so that people have to stay if they want to see him.

Starting a scene in your own town is hard work if it doesnt have many fans because you have to do everything yourself, if you can find 3 or 4 other people then thats a good base to begin with to really push the scene. You need to get in peoples faces, get them down to your event. Tell your girlfriends that you will buy them a couple of drinks or pay for their ticket if she can bring 4 other paying girls along. Wherever girls go....boys will follow.

Yea mate as redwingz said start small and build your way up.

i don't know what its like out your way, but in Ireland most bars etc have function rooms that will let you run nights for free and they make their money from the bar. then whats made on the door is yours.

dont just jump straight in with hardcore maybe have a few dj's and start the night off with a trance dj set and build up to you ending the night on a banging hardcore set.

another thing is to get a dj that will play an oldskool happyhardcore/hardcore set that way youl bring the older ppl back to their youth! you cant go wrong with 90's happy hardcore!!

you will soon build up a fan base for hardcore!

these days you almost don't have to print flyers (but they still help), you can spread the word faster through facebook

if you can't find a club to play at find a warehouse or big open space that will you can use. you'll have to find someone for sound/speakers but that usually doesn't cost too much.

That one depends on the size of your space, if its big be prepared to pay alot for sound to fill it out. Also Funktion 1s don't come cheap! (there's no better sound then a Funktion 1 in my books)
