I'm also exactly the same, much more recently as I've started exploring other hard dance genres and I notice the different in levels of production between genres. I'm not saying everyone who makes hardcore is tone deaf or anything like that, but new artists upcoming in other scenes (hands up, hardstyle notably) seem so much more advanced than the likes of gammer / styles (who have been doing this for nearly 2 decades).
It's not even just the new stuff, I listen back to other tunes that aren't brand new and think, wtf is this? I can't even producer hardcore as of late without being utterly disappointed in what I've created.
There's nothing being made that a truly enjoy anymore, or at least not consistently. Sure Sy & Unknown and Technikore make the odd track that will give you goosebumps the size of pimples but what's the point in following a genre when only 1 in let's sat 250 tracks you actually enjoy and can admire the work put into them?
It just seems there's so much not to like about hardcore atm and it's a big big shame :(

Posting counterexamples is pointless. You could link me the most amazing, original, beautiful tune and I could say its awful and you have horrible taste in music.
Because the burden of "proof" is on you and we're arguing things that are difficult to impossible to prove empirically, my assertion that your music is bad and you should feel bad would always be right in my own mind.

But just for the hell of it, I'll post a few tracks that I, just one person, feel it's worth paying attention to hardcore music for. Agree? Disagree? Does it matter? Not really.

His point is not that new hardcore is bad, its that hardcore was always bad and we just never noticed it or something along those lines.

Yeah. I think that is the beauty of liking anything that even most other people think is just bad. You like it because you like it, there isn't any logical reason, but you like it anyway and there is other people that like it too and nothing else matters other than you like it. Hardcore has always been that way i think and it's one of the things that made it special. It's not cool, and the people who liked it really liked it, and it meant something.

Not necessarily that it's always been bad, but more that sometimes when listening to hardcore it's impossible to enjoy and just feel a strong sense of disgust in what you're listening to and no, I don't mean in a good way. Other times it's great, in my case anyway, sometimes I can listen and enjoy it perfectly. But then again I can't speak on behalf of OP of course, and I could be wrong, but that's my opinion ;)

This is exactly what I was getting at mate. I think you might be right about it being reasonably specific to hardcore as well. I rarely get that way with "proper" music, or even dance genres with a higher average production quality. I'm not saying it's good or bad, just that when I really stand back and "step out" of the music (often completely unintentionally), I can't help but be a little bit ashamed that I'm usually so easily amused by it. Maybe it only affects me when I've got my cynical hat on and I'm subconsciously deconstructing everything around me to the point of meaninglessness. I don't really have any choice over when that happens. This topic definitely isn't meant to be a dig at hardcore or its fans (myself included). Although it has confirmed that this phenomenon is not as common as I'd thought. That's a downer. :P Basically, the best analogy for this I have is suspension of disbelief in films. If you can never suspend your disbelief while watching films, you're the kind of person who laughs at hardcore, I'd imagine. If you can always suspend your disbelief, you'll probably pretty consistently enjoy hardcore. If you're somewhere in between like me then sometimes you'll just be hearing a repetition of electronic components that all sound a bit silly in isolation. And, analogous to films, the better made the music and more realistic the instruments (i.e. not hardcore at all), the less likely you are to run into disbelief problems. There's 2 ways suspension of disbelief can vary between films (or music in this case). Obviously the first one is variance in the quality of what you're seeing and/or hearing and the second one is personal variance which I think is probably the rarer kind. Idk what controls the latter, probably thoughts, subconscious processes and all that, but it makes some people (like me) very inconsistent in what they enjoy. It's really annoying. And it's particularly noticeable with hardcore because hardcore was never that believable to start with.

That is so true.
....so, why do we still like it so much?
