As I understand it, he's studying CS too and I'm studying a CS related course in two universities seeing CS students for years. We only describe what we see. As you said, there are some cute girls but the percentage is very low in comparison to...say...law students or psychology. And some CS-guys walk around like they only borrowed their bodies. But that's all okay, because looks don't matter and you will get respect and credit for what you are capable of, and not how you look and what fancy clothes you're wearing. So, I'm not angry or disappointed to state the fact, that women in CS (and engineering) are rare and hot looking ones even more.

Why should they be discouraged? They should be encouraged because being pretty and/or a women in CS may(!) help them a lot, because men are eager to help a damsel in distress. ;)

I mean those toothless hounds on the dance floor. So peeps why do you think the hardcore scene attracts such ugly hogs?
Mabey if you didn't get so wasted so early in the night you wouldn't find yourself in the local monthly care home disco by accident.

Here are three albums; one from a recent Uproar and two from the Pool Party at HITD in the Sun last year (No! There isn't any pictures of me and my Greek God like body, I've already skipped through and checked).
I hope everyone can see these. Make your own minds up.

How about some pics of the "smaller" or events or those that focus less on the mainstream styles of hardcore?

Yeah, you got it right. I'm studying for my masters in CS and I can only echo your sentiments.
Perhaps the situation is different where you are, Serenity, but over here it's pretty dire! I don't think you're entirely right about the whole discouraging women in STEM subjects thing though. Were you put off studying CS by the negative stereotypes attached? We shouldn't really expect those negative stereotypes to have any more or less of an effect on women than they do on us. Sure, they exist and, actually, from my perspective, they often seem accurate enough but it didn't put us off studying engineering subjects because it's what we wanted to do!
Stereotypes that are true are even funnier anyway. I was at a big house party the other day with a couple of CS mates and we successfully, and rather obliviously, repelled every girl in the place by discussing machine learning techniques and natural language processing long after we should've stopped. I can't help but laugh whenever I'm talking to someone doing another subject and they say "so tell me about computer science". Being a computer science academic is great fun. :)

I don't have the experience to say. However, the freeform events Ive been to have some good looking and very nice girls. Some Hardcore events might to, but different events can attract totally different types of people. An event I went to on Friday in Vauxhall was occupied by 50% topless lads with flat caps and girls that I didnt find particularly attractive...
It's a strange one to understand. Tgere are some events where most people fit the general sterotype that the initial post suggests, but Hardcore is listened to by different people all over the world now.Not everyone is from a certain geographic or demographic.
That said, some events Ive been to, I've felt like I've been completely out of place. Maybe because I'm tall, maybe be I have all my teeth.. Its hard to call. Regardless I've always found the events friendly and fun.
edit. As a footnote, there was an attractive girl dressed as a zebra on stilts on friday at mentioned Vauxhall event and I saw people poking her ass and doing inappropriate stuff like that. She was head and shoulders the best looking girl there.
Another note, there are countless generations of ravers at these events. There are going to be some veterans too!

From speaking with friends around the world, the treatment of smart women in general is quite different over here. I've personally never been put off from trying to stick out my neck and do something that's important to me (my first university had a ratio of 4 men to each female when I started - they added business courses so it's better now). I've had a terrible experience with trying to find jobs, where they will hire men with fewer qualifications because they just assume women are stupid, and even had a supervisor complain about getting females on their team right after starting a help desk job, because apparently all women are stupid and so much extra work. I finally have an employer that isn't like that and have gotten 3 promotions in the last 2 years. So the cultural factor is pretty big, and in the US you face a lot of negativity from childhood on up. If you aren't a strong person you will cave and find something else to do.
For the second part ... I've scared away more men than I can count with similar things haha. Whether it be chemistry, geology, or computer programming. But - why would I want someone who is bored by things that I find fascinating?
