Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys, based on your responses I think I'm gonna turn up at other northern events dressed as a gorilla wearing a pink tutu and give out some flyers & CD's, whilst some ASBO teens film themselves kicking me in and then post it up on YouTube
Seriously though, you've all got your heads screwed on right, and I'm gonna take some of your ideas onboard

Production is the biggest thing I would push in the event industry at the moment, that includes audio, lighting and visuals. Get a decent stack of speakers (ideally Funktion one) with a full dynamic range that reveals your music properly, lighting that doesn't blind but actually adds to the venue (and visuals), with people actually controlling it (more often then not i see lights purely powered by "music mode" and this isn't adequate!)
People seem to skip out on visuals alot, this isn't on! its not hard to install a simple projector with some basic music visualizer running of your audio source, additionally more people are starting to become technologically aware of things such as projection mapping which lowers the cost in creating custom visual structures that simply look amazing.
In short i believe that if you put some money from the artist budget into production you will create a better party. People like going to see artists they know, but heightening peoples visual and auditory senses simultaneously whilst partying gives a great feel and atmosphere to the event. If you create an environment that's fun to be in and completely different to everything else, then the music is just a natural addition.
