Long time hardcore (and edm in general) fan here. I posted here under a different moniker years ago. I've recently been lurking the forums, and browsed a couple pages of threads to find that...dj luna c has stopped producing hardcore? Dj sy was accused of child pornography by storm? Ham left? Scott brown is back...but I never knew he left. This is all news to me. I'm especially bummed out that luna c left, because I saw him at his last show in toronto and had NO IDEA that it was his last hardcore gig.
I'm a little concerned because it seems from what I've read on the forums that the scene has taken some fatal blows. Is hardcore music dying? What producers or dj's are leading the scene now? When I started listening to hardcore years ago it was mostly the bonkers stuff. Was a big fan of scott brown, sy, seduction, gammer, jakazid, luna c, sharkey...I'm hoping all these guys are still around in some way.
I know this thread is kind of all over the place, but I'm astounded at how much has changed.

Is hardcore dying? No, it's evolving, as with every music genre does. Maybe it's evolving at a much faster pace than most people would like, but that's just the nature of this particular side of the music industry.
And granted it would be nice that the old timers stick around forever, but I don't want them to stick around just for the sake of it, producing possibly mediocre quality music just to stay relevant to the scene. I want them to stay as long as they can pour as much of themselves into the scene as they can, and if that's not possible, then they owe it to themselves to move on to bigger and/or better things.
When was the last time you followed the scene closely?

I followed the scene very closely from around 2008 to 2010. Since then I have cooled off. My taste for electronic dance music grew and I got more into house, trance, techno, jungle, and everything in between, but I have a soft spot for hardcore and always will, hence why I am here to check in. I do go to the odd event when it happens in my city and I'm not bogged down by work.

What city? I imagine maybe Toronto, since it's in the Ontario province. Was there for last year's Total Request Rave to see the Hardcore Underground crew, was a great night.

Oh yeah? Do you live in toronto? I was at the exact same event. Met my girlfriend there and I've been dating her for a year now. That was total request 7 right? I heard total request 8 is delayed til this summer.

Actually no, I flew in from Houston to go see the Hardcore Underground crew. Also went to the pre-party at Nocturnal the night before.

Well said. Hardcore is definitely changing and it's gotten some fantastic new artists and sounds. I'm sure there are new artists you're bound to really enjoy.
JAKAZiD is definitely still around, he releases a lot on Japanese albums as well.
Speaking of which, check out DJ Shimamura. I really really enjoy his music. Look for this tune:
DJ Shimamura feat Yukacco - Like A Rainbow
Plenty of new quality tunes. Just need to start looking again :)
Hardcore Underground 6 was just released, get a hold of it.

If you'd started this thread maybe eighteen months ago, I think you might have received some pretty pessimistic responses about how the immediate future was looking for Hardcore.
Things were changing quite dramatically around about that time. There was a noticeable shift in sound/style by some of the leading producers. The feel and structure of tracks changed from uplifting and feel-good, to dirty and filthy. More aggression. Extremely clean production. It wasn't to everyone's liking, and when Clubland X-Treme Hardcore 8 was released in January 2012, there was something of a backlash from a decent portion of the scene.
I think one of the things to be noted about this period - and people's thoughts, feelings and fears within it - is that people felt uncertain of the future because they thought there was a possibility that everyone might end up producing in this new style. Fortunately, after a while, it became relatively clear that certain producers would go with this new style, and others would stick with the more traditional Hardcore format of uplifting vocals/optimistic vibes.
Gradually, the demand for this dirtier-sounding Hardcore has declined, generally speaking. Depending on what you're into, and where you focus your Hardcore attention - this style is still quite prevalent in some areas.
Hardcore Undrerground - as some people have mentioned - have made a big(ger) effort in recent times, and as a result managed to scoop Best Label at least year's Hardcore Heaven Awards (massively well deserved). They've been unbelievably productive this year and released, Hardcore Underground Breaks, a Marc Smith artist album, Hardcore Underground 6 and This Is Powerstomp (produced by Joey Riot and Kurt) already, and have artist albums from Brisk and Al Storm & Euphony coming soon, as well as a Hardcore Underground 2013 (mixed by Klubfiller, Ramos, Unknown, Sc@r and Chris Fear), Happy Hardcore Underground and possibly a Sharkey artist album as well (although I've not heard anything about that in a while).
Scott Brown has indeed returned (mixing one of the CDs on Hardcore Underground 6 with Al Storm) and is making brand new music. He's released four new tracks on Evolution Records in recent weeks. He's given the whole scene a lift.
Luna-C will actually be playing at a small event in London next March ( http://www.happyhardcore.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=62728 ), but I'm personally not too sure of his activity status within the scene, musically. Freeform seems to be gaining a bit more popularity and exposure (to the wider scene) these days. At least I think it is. My personal interest in it has increased in recent years, so it's difficult to assess it objectively. Thumpa's label ReBuild Music has relased multiple Freeform CDs over the last few years with the final one due for release in Spring 2014. They're all sold out (limited releases) but they're basically all exceptional. Not that it's especially relevant to you, but there are a big number of small and medium sized events that are doing very well here in the UK. I attend quite a lot of them, and it certainly does not feel like Hardcore music is dying. At all! Hope that was helpful! :-)

Aren't you the fella who used to have an Icewind Dale artwork as an avatar?

Thanks for the update everyone. Hardcore is one of those genres I'd like to succeed. It's one of the smaller scenes, although not fragile by any means. Still, I believe the artists and fans need to stick together to keep it alive.
Also samination, my last user name was Analog_Dreams. I have never had an icewind dale avatar. Icewind refers to the moniker I use to produce music, it's listed in my signature. Give my soundcloud a go!

If it wasn't dying 3 years ago then it's certainly not dying now! Lol. It's going in the opposite direction.

Luna-C is known for changing his opinion from time to time ;). This is from one of his recent newsletters:
quote:
Something else happened, and I dont want to jinx it, but since I have been
uploading all the old KF stuff, and since I have finished my folky side
project...I sort of...maybe...kinda...feel like making some hardcore. I am
considering mixing the techniques I have learned creating the live stuff I
have been doing with some hardcore ideas I have. It may well turn out
absolutely awful, but we will see, eh?

Ideally I'd prefer there to be alot less (or no) bootlegs of pop songs and remixes of classic hardcore tracks. 10 years that was fine to have classic hardcore remixes but I want to hear more original tracks - with vocal tracks having decent vocals without them being cheesey.
