From what I understand (from one of my educative sessions with Matt (Hard2Get)), he, almost, single-handedly kept the scene alive when it was going through a crisis around '99.

Right, I've done my absolute damndest to say as little about this as possible until now. However, I think it's worth stepping back for some perspective and bleating a little bit about how I view the whole thing.
The big flashpoint: Freeform categories. Well, this should never have been added. I thought that when people were saying it should be added, I thought it after the result last year and I think it now. It's like asking me to vote on best Whiskey when I don't drink it or know anything about it. IF the entire thing had been effectively gamed then maybe *MAYBE* it could have secured some reliable main stage bookings for whoever was waving the flag.
So, yea, I use the phrase "gamed". See, the thing is, the awards aren't fixed and never have been. Not directly. They are, however, going to very directly reflect the facts as they have been presented. In most cases this actually leads to a reliable result. It is very, very, unlikely to do so for us because as a collective we are so fantastically under rewarded every step of the way.
I am *not* talking about Room 2 last night, SV have been very supportive this year and no-one is above swapping out of the main arena from time to time. No-one. What I am actually talking about is better demonstrated by NYE. Go look at the line-ups on the major stages. Yea, it's "banana to a knife fight" time. We don't stand a chance.
So, in the context of UK Hardcore circa 2013 we're still lurking on the periphery. Doing elaborate dances on the few occasions a spotlight comes our way.
As long as most of the major promoters give us short shrift there's little more we can do to accelerate. The really sad thing about this is I sincerely feel that we do, and to a far greater degree could, contribute towards the genre.
Looping back, the real surprise is TiP winning best album. There's a lot to take away from that, but the most important one is that that there are two huge positives. One: Things can change. Two: Healthy competition is a good thing.
Joey has made no secret of the fact that our winning last year inspired him to work harder, do more. This is a VERY good thing. What would be even better is if these results inspire a healthy competition from the FW camp. There's so much talent in this scene, and it all feels so underutilised.
If I'm brutally honest, we didn't *want* to win anything. Freeform DJ pisses people off. Best label pisses people off. We kinda learned that last year! A result in any of the other categories would paint a huge ass target on us that we'd spend far too much time avoiding artillery rather than getting on with what we're doing. We *could* have spent some time publically hinting around for support. We *could* have run around behind the scenes getting friends and supporters to vote. *Instead* we focused on putting together albums, and writing music. We're in this for the long haul.
In addendum, personally, I'm absolutely thrilled about Prospect taking the breakthrough sweep!

Gutted that HU didn't win anything. I know it doesn't make a blind bit of difference and the guys don't really care (as seen by the response from last year's awards). But, I really want to see HU get the recognition for all the amazing work that they do in the scene.
For me they are the best thing about hardcore and have been for years now. They're the driving force in the scene and are continually pushing the music forwards. I question whether I would be into hardcore anywhere near as much as I am if it wasn't for HU.

As for the Freeform result, I honestly don't blame the average voters for this. Bloody hell, we cant all agree on what makes freeform freeform nevermind some little styles fan boy trying to place a vote in a category he knows nothing about.
Its great to see Scott Brown winning the lifetime achievement award :) the amount of outstanding material that man has churned out over the years is exceptional, the scene wouldn't be what it is today without him.

Funny, the people most desperate on the boards and FB to yell for votes were the ones ending up at #4 in the total results. :P A lesson to be learned there maybe!
I just don't understand how TiP could possibly beat HU6 or even CXH9 for that matter. I mean no offense, but I just don't get it. :)

You know it's a bit ironic that Thumpa was one of the ones that led the movement into getting Best Freeform DJ/Producer category on the awards yet no actual freeform dj/producer has yet to win it.

lol, yeah, what a joke that was as well. Obviously, great that Al Storm was recognised but insulting he was considered Breakthrough.
If Al Storm won best breakthrough then something is very wrong. He's been producing since 1996.

Well remember that during the time of Al Storm's win, the nominations were picked by, well who the fuck knows who picked them, but it wasn't voters. So when you put up one very established dj/producer like Al Storm against some that are not-so-well known, clearly the odds would be in Al Storm's favor.
And there is a very good possibility that perhaps people were too stupid enough not to realize how long Al Storm's career has spanned. These voters have about the same mentality as the ones who voted Kutski to win best Freeform DJ/Producer, so they wouldn't have known that Al Storm used to just be known as DJ Storm and/or Alistair Storm.
I'm curious though, which Storm came first? Al Storm, or the obnoxious pedo-crying asshole who is in dire need of a dentist appointment?

I asked for votes as I thought something like this might happen (again), a non freeform DJ winning best freeform DJ. Its not a lesson to be learned, I didn't want to win best freeform DJ for my own satisfaction, I wanted to win it so a freeform DJ would win it and that would open the door to more sets playing proper freeform at big raves and getting more people into the music. I had the most chance as I played at some good things this year, plus my label releases a wide variety of music that gets people interested in artists like Le Dos-on, Nomic etc alongside people like Douglas, jD-KiD etc. The plan backfired unfortunately, so you won't be hearing from me again on the subject.
