Like Thumpa, I started out by going to events, annoying people, playing on pirate radio. You had to put a lot of time, money and effort into everything. Then the internet evolved and you could do a lot more, like upload mixes with artwork which seemed to be the way of getting yourself out there. Nowadays you have social media, sites like sound cloud and it's very easy for everyone to upload a mix and spam the shit out of it. It costs nothing. No-one seems to want to work for anything these days. It's like people just put DJ in front of their name, upload a mix & expect the bookings to flood in.
Thumpa doesn't produce, but he's worked is bollocks off pushing his label, put his own time and money into something and it's got him to main stage at West Fest, so it is possible if you have the right mind set.
For me, I don't produce. In a way I've gone back to the old way of going through radio and promoting myself that way. I don't really upload mixes, only the occasional live mix from one of my shows, & I don't actively try and get bookings, but i work hard on the Rough Tempo thing trying to put on good line ups and get the best guests i can. The harder I worked, the bigger it became, and Breeze wanted people on the label who had the right attitude and drive, so he asked me to join. That was a month or more after Me and Breeze put on that CXH9 takeover show I'd agree that I got lucky, but I worked bloody hard before any of that happened, and I've worked even harder since.

Good luck! I accept demos for my label but unfortunately 85% of the stuff people send me is absolute tripe, but I will always listen to stuff and give my (blunt) feedback.
would you listen to my demo i've put together for the Future of Hardcore mix series MC Offside is doing at the moment and tell me if its any good?

To be honest, I think that nowdays is pretty hard to get noticed as a DJ if you aren't a producer yourself or you don't produce your own tracks.
Producing your own tracks will actually give you a possibility to develope your sound which makes your DJ mixes standing out: isn't easy at all to stand out if you just mix anthems (including bootlegs) without playing something that's actually your "signature sound". And nowdays, as somebody else said, there's too much competition around.
Then, after (or even meanwhile) you get grips with music production, you can start attending events and meeting the people and the DJs of the events. And remember this golden rule: "it's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice". Don't be too much rude, but neighter too much chasing.
