its also a good idea to look at 2nd hand ones as u can get good bargain, but they r sometimes hard to return to there original sound, and sometimes its hard to find replacement pieces for synthes over 10 yrs old. i heard roland stop making pieces for their instruments over 10 yrs old. yamaha are bringing out a new satrer synth soon apparently, or it may have come out a few weeks ago, similar to cx6.

well i'll definitely pass on anything that calls itself a starter synth or a begginer synth.. anything that makes it "easier" i'm not into.. anything like a 505 or rm1x i'll pass on too

i need a (keyboard) synth thats has a tasty sound and has all the controls you'll ever need and even some you wont.. but i cant fork over 6 billion bucks for it :)

i'll have a look around for a korg ms2000 (mm oldskool hey? sounds like just what i need)

the chemical bros love the ms2000, they said it had squelchy phat beats of the 70's style synth

Well IMO if U wanna start producing HHC and U like all those Piano's and Strings don't get a synth. Get a good sampler. U can still duplicate most synth sounds with a sampler, plus U get all the real sounds like those loverly pianos. Plus if ur into the break beat style U can take the Amen break and create ur own rhythm patters with a sampler, u can't do that with a synth.

But if ur into the more trancy sounding HC then maybe a synth is the way to go. But I would advise against the MS2000. Get a used Novation Nova for the same cash. The MS2000 (If i remeber correctly) is only 4 mono parts and I know it has practically no effect section. So unless you have another synth and or another sampler you won't be able to create music with only an MS2000. The Nova has 16 Stereo voices now with the new patch and a great effects section. Although the actual synth engine in the Nova is a bit substandard it more than makes up for that with great effects and a low low price for what U get. U should be able to get one for around $700-800 US used and in good shape ^_^

PS: I also love the Virus, but they are practically impossible to get now a days and even used they are going for $1200 US +. But if you can afford one the are great!

I wouldnt call an RM1x a starter synth.. as its based more on its sequencer than anything else...
And its sequencer is prolly the best Ive used.. yes even better than the Akai's (ill prolly get flamed for that :) ).
Its got some good sounds, but the MC has the JV tonegenerator, which is VERY nice.

I agree, a sampler is the way to go, and use your PC to create basic instruments/wave forms to load into the sampler, plus, you will NEVER need an additional sound source, as you have the whole world to sample...

As for synths being a sound source, I use a load of softsynths (scorpion2.0 and PPGWave are the best IMO) and a JP8000 which does all the old Roland juno/Jup sounds and more...
Mess with its feedback oscillator for wicked buildups ..
its OS is a bitch with midi thou...
its very particualr for some reason...
