Hi, going to be selling my old technics slip mats with my old decks, and so need some newones to sit upon my shiny new PDX-2000 decks. Obvious chocie is vestax ones, but I've seen a few random designs I like on htfr.com site.
Basically my question is, are slipmats all much of a muchness (I don't really scratch that much yet) or are some really good and some complete crap? If so how far up the scale are the technics ones I have?

Slipmatts are pretty much the same, just different designs as far as I know.

the difference isn't big enough to notice unless you get some cheapo cheapo slipmats that actually make it worse,go for whatever design you like it ain't gonna affect your mixing

i find the foam mats to be the least slippery and the felt/velvetty-like mats to be the most slippery. depends on what you like, easier to move or more pick up traction.

ok, slipmats...very ****ing important choice when setting up ya TTs for optimal performance
if you think all slipmats are all the same, you have never used good ones ;)
here is the run down as far as i know…
most felt mats will do the trick if your not a turntablist and are rather easy on your back cueing.
to get some extra slip some ppl insert 12" cutouts of wax paper under their slipmats...yes this increases slip/slide but shouldn’t be done as it will leave a filthy layer of wax on either your platter or slipmat (depending on what side up you placed the wax paper)
ah you say, use slippy plastic inserts you get with rekids to insert under you slipmat to get them nice and slippy....yeah you can, but if you play a warped record next time you try scratch with it or drop it in, it will slip so much, the platter will spin and not the record ;)
when it comes to slip mats for the turntablist or ever a bedroom banger i see you have 3 options

however after finding out about all those you will see that each of them are almost paper thin, this could be an issue if you have a fair few warped records (like me)
if you have some warp action i recommend getting either the DSM 6, 7 or 8 from stanton. they are much thicker and fluffy, so a warped records sit almost flat on the pile of the slip mat...they are rather slippy too, cos they come with proper (not home made) scratch inserts (plasticky stuff you wack under the mat). as far as record control goes with these mats i find them fine, not as good as the sewer slime mats (by far the best out of the bunch) but pretty damn fine.

oh one last thing....if your game, take your platter off your TT and spray it with "Armorall" http://www.armorall.com/index1.html wipe off the excess with a rag, wack back on TT, then put on a standard felt slipmat and watch it slip and slide just as good as butter rugs :)
warning: do this @ your own risk, i dont know how, but im sure some silly ppl out there could **** up their decks doing that :P

I have Technics slipmatts right now. I think they're a bit smoother then my old Numark ones. Really there isn't much of a difference, but if you wanna' get really into it and technical about everything I guess it's good you're looking for the best.

gnaaa I must admit I'm just tempted to pic up some vestax mats for 20 quid because they look nice + similar to my technics ones.... ok so called old fasioned but I like them :P

The 1200s come with sheets of plastic for that purpose ;)
