why do dj's say it is hard to play out, because it takes ages to learn, and there are no shortcuts, all the gadgets either add an element or speed you up for a bit, before dumping you at the start when you decide to do without. just keep at it, again, and again and again. you will get there. this is the only decent answer you will get to the "beats being out/not sure which one is ahead" question. your ears will adapt, thats how you know when mixing with any format, just nudge a record, if the bangs go furter apart, you nudged it the wrong way.
hopefully the beats are a constant fud fud, this will mean its beatmatched, you just need to aline the beats then

Well jonny we can sob cry and work together
*he says hoping jonny doesn't get it figured before him*
No really keep it going, I was also like ' I am only doing hardcore!!'
Then cried a lot screamed a lot then tried D&B
*Thought why is this easier*
Then to House which again to get passable is really easy!!
tried Garage and trance then back to hardcore honestly I was better at it, a change is as good as a rest an all that!!
Never fear jonny both of us don't want to be pop dj's and its better to try and fail than never try at all. Respect due

True, very true. I just picked up KFA 'ancient sound of hardcore' volume 1 + 2. Challanged me a bit mixing wise (don't have solid beats to rely on) but great music, and a change in tunes + style was refreshing.

the only thing i can say to this is, i have a bpm counter, but never look at it.
the only way to beat match / beatmix is to use your ears, you can normally tell if beats are aligned.
if not, just nip the fader out and then in again, if the beats arent aligned you'll be able to tell.

just takes practice.

oh, and beat counters are w@nk trust me...

Grey's BPM104 actually has a range of 80BPM- 199BPM so there should be no problems with it counting BPM's over 160BPM.

Even if you dont like BPM counters, there are plenty of good uses for them - cataloging your colection is one example. I know a lot of guys that do this.

What if the kick drum is especially soft? Or especially hard? Or really resonant and drawn out like a gabber kick? Or what if the song is breakbeat? Then the beat counter gets confused ;)
