I've seen it used on ads for shows and stuff. Was just wondering if it meant anything in particular lol

Any DJs attached to that description?
Usually some people, like me sometimes, like to refer to it this way because UK hardcore sounds a bit too regional, even though the majority of that style of hardcore is predominately from the UK. But to upfront usually includes UK hardcore produced from North American producers, Australia (like S3RL) or other regions around the world besides UK.

Yeah, recent is the only valid meaning. You're not going to get classics in an upfront set

errr false. Fires In The Sky. It certainly is far from the happy hardcore days, it's UK hardcore but also upfront hardcore. Also a lot of the popular DS tracks of the 2000s are upfront.

Upfront = Avant garde (Vanguard)
Meaning: the forefront of an action or movement, which would perfectly sit with arpz definition.

I also understand it to be time related.
edited to add: there is a helter skelter cd set from maybe 2006-2007 or so that went from 92 to upfront and was labelled that way with upfront being the new stuff. There are other smaller comps before that have used it to describe discs of new stuff when sold with classics disks.

so it's just another way of saying "modern" hardcore?

lol @ avant-garde. Do you really think the hardcore scene thinks that deeply about using terms to define a certain style of hardcore?

Pretty much. While some people, especially in the US, call it happy hardcore, it's not a term that really fits in with a description of what UK hardcore is these days. You get a hardcore track from the 90s and compare it to one from an artist album like Alex Prospect's, there's clearly a difference where happy hardcore would fit with one of those tracks better.

Perhaps not, hence the gravitation toward the term "up-front" instead?

I don't think there's any rhyme or reason for some of the terms, they just stick.
