I have been getting into Hard House a lot lately, mostly older stuff though from early 2000s and there are a lot of similarities to Hardcore, mostly Freeform but a lot of Old Skool samples borrowed and of course the 'Hoovers'

Just wondering what you prefer? I like Hard House over UK Hardcore but not as much as Gabber of course. I always had a soft spot for Freeform and think the two styles could go well together.

What you all think?

Hard house always bored the shit out of me, although to be fair I was never really into it to hear that much of it. I never thought it was bad or anything, it just never did it for me at all.

I was briefly into Hard house during the Hardcore 'wilderness years'.

Soon saw sense

You might have been listening to the wrong stuff!

Hardcore 'wilderness' as in 99-02? That seems to be the Hard House peak lol

Some might say where are in a wilderness again now, or at least we were a few years ago but what was the new replacement? Dubstep? No thank you!

I was actually a bit shy of Hard House for a while. There was the more minimal stuff, a lot of filler tunes but there where a lot of gems around. Some of it is not far off from Hardcore but less focus on the hard kicks or the breaks.

They where big on hoovers as well as I mentioned which is not too bad if you love that

Ahhh, Hard House, my love before I even knew about Happy Hardcore.

I remember I was walking through Wal-Mart, and DJ Irene had just released her cd, Audio Underground, and I sampled it on the little scanners and loved it. I fell in love with American Hard House, and the Underground Construction label. I had no idea of the UK sound until around 2005-ish, when I started going to raves.

I prefer the late 90s/early 2000s UK Hard House because it's not 3 min. of the breakdown, and it's more noisey :P

Have you heard American Hard House from the 90s? That stuff is golden.

I like Hard House but it satisfies completely different tastes to Hardcore. One focusses mainly on melody and the other doesn't.
It's the same for many genres, they all appeal to different tastes so one could never subsitute the other.

I used to love Hard House! There was a real boom for it in Bristol. Lots of clubs playing it. I got a few bookings playing Hard House too! Wotsee used to book me and my brother Compulsion to DJ it. Hixxy once said, after hearing one of our sets, he had never heard anything like it before! :)

Apart from a tiny dose of D&B here and there, Ive only ever really bought and listened to hardcore. Hard house just didn't do it for me back then. I was curious as to what VG was up to when he made the jump but even that couldn't persuade me to venture out of my comfort zone. A lot of friends at the time took a liking to hard house but I just found it a bit too ploddy. I used to give all the tapes in the 12-packs a go, though.

Feel free to message me with any US Hard House tunes that you know!

Interesting how you mention a female Hard House artist. I have never known a 'EDM' scene with so many female producers or DJs as much as Hard House. I know we have a few female Hardcore artists but it is usually 1/20 in favour of the men. Hard House seemed to bring in a lot more woman to the scene and what brilliant DJs they where as well!

We had a very big following in Bournemouth as well. I knew a few people from Southampton and Portsmouth who where very big on Hard House, even more so than Hardcore and there seems to be some ties to the Hampshire scene. Southampton also had Brisk who played Hard House under Stimulant DJ and well known clubs such as the Opera House used to host Slinky which was at it's peak around the time I was leaving school.

We have had some minor following for DnB as well and by 2005 everyone went all UK Hardcore mad. The local 'chavs' where going nuts over Darren Styles and Raverbaby and Hardcore over took Hard House at the local events.

I had also been to a few dingy underground clubs which where more geared towards Hard House and Hardstyle as well. Later Dubstep took off and local events started following that instead and a lot of big clubs have closed down or reformed as smaller bars A lot of student haunts seem to be common in Bournemouth now, a lot of these trendy places that play either mainstream or live music and a few of these 'Hipsters' hanging around who go to either Bournemouth University or Arts University Bournemouth and some of the graduates who remain in the local area along with the local 'middle class kids' of London commuters with little or know interest in real EDM.

Just remembered the Bunter set from the Energy 99 pack is pretty cool actually.

Yeah the Bristol scene died off too. Then Hardcore took over. Now it's mostly D&B nights and big events like Cream most popular in Bristol. Hardcore still has a good presence in Bristol though. Just it's not a big as it once was.

Bristol was said to be a big player in the rave scene early on. My guess is it has followed the recent UK trendy of smaller bars against big clubs?
