^^ not all freeform is as happy as nu-skool HHC. The beauty with freeform is that it can be as dark, as bright, as happy, as angry, as melodic, or as crunchy as you like; it's only limited by the imagination of the producer.

^^ rarely does freeform go as far as being happy. Uplifting? Yes. Happy? No.
There's still some reasonably "happy" HHC being produced, though, so you may have hope yet.

Cuz if it were easy, people like me wouldn't be able to act all superior and wanky just because we can talk about subjective topics like music in such a scientific and 'knowledgable' way that people think we know what we're talking about
Really, genres are useful for exploring music, ie if you hear something that isn't like anything you've ever heard before, find out what genre it is and hunt it down and hopefully you'll find other stuff that you'll like as well. Just a couple of things to remember:
- Genres are classes of music. You're allowed to have variation within genres. Just cuz one song uses some elements that aren't in another, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're different genres. Ideally, different genres should mean that the music is fundamentally different.
- Think of genres as options rather than choices. Just because you like one genre, doesn't mean you're not allowed to like or even accept the validity of other genres. It's surprising (and disturbing) how many people fall into this trap.
(Gawd I'm in a lecturing mood this morning.)

Like people have said, it really depends on the song. Some new tracks are quite uplifting while also being bangin, but not always. To make it clear to how different uk hardcore and freeform can be, take a listen to the clips:
UK Hardcore: UFO & MC Marley - Connections (plenty of weak sauce on this one :P)
http://www.nuenergy.co.uk/audio/raverbaby/baby16a.rm Straight-up Freeform: Stormtrooper - Funkin Jungle (funky! love it!!!) http://www.nuenergy.co.uk/audio/digitalbeats/digi003aa.rm Plenty of artists do mash it all up to great success such as CLSM, Uplift, Lost Soul, Stargazer, filling musical genre gaps but always keeping it real.
