HardcoreUnderground

We're proud to be able to finally announce the next release in our series of compilation CDs: 'Hardcore Underground 5' is out now!

Following up on our 'Hardcore Underground Presents: 2010' and 'Fracus & Darwin - Balancing Act' album releases from last year, this project has been a long time in the making. We have worked as hard as we can to ensure that this follow-up allows us to continue ticking as many boxes as possible when it comes to quality, variety, innovation and good value.

The album comprises a 4xCD Digipak, across which we aim to cover as much exciting music from across the Hardcore spectrum as possible, from established and new artists alike.

CD1: Al Storm & Technikore

We're pleased to welcome the versatile and talented DJ / Production force that is Technikore on board to team up with long standing hero and label-mate Al Storm. Both of these artists have earned their respective places in the industry with consistently strong releases and live appearances.

CD2: Fracus & Darwin Vs. DJ Brisk

With exciting studio collaborations between the three of them this year and a shared ferocious passion for variety, energy and open-minded DJ mixes, HU's Fracus & Darwin finally team up as a duo with DJ Brisk.

CD3: Slipmatt & Entity

It's almost impossible to introduce DJ Slipmatt without using cliches! We're immensely proud to welcome arguably the most influential of Hardcore DJs and producers on board, teaming him up with our own DJ Entity as he makes his much anticipated debut mixing an HU CD.

CD4: Douglas & A.B.

Two further exciting debutants join the fray for HU5 to push their exciting and forward thinking sound (and all the various artists that encompasses). As one door closes for the more underground sounds of Hardcore so another opens with plenty of talented and capable artists to continue pushing the music forward well into the 21st century.

Lets go halves on it then and i'll have the other 2!
stray Awesome to see underground sounds like A.B & Douglas in the mix. I'll buy it just for CD4, same as I did last time for Kev/Sharkey's mix.
Wilky I don't listen to much hardcore these days... but wow... this is going to get hammered

Questions like: "What tracks are going to be on this album?"

Looks pretty, well, interesting is the word, I think. Looking forward to it.

Oi twatty! I'm meant to be the sarcastic one around here. Got to agree it'd help though.

LOL. Twatty! Do people actually say that where you live?

But yeah, agreed, a tracklist would be swell. All in good time.

Very strange, or very nice! :o)

Imagine a full CD of rave breaks and breakbeat hardcore...
Quicksilver Would have been awesome if there were a new Slipmatt tune in there, but I doubt it. CD3 looks the most interesting, the most surprising. I know CD2 will deliver big time, and I'm pretty sure CD1 will be great as well. I'm not so hyped for CD4 mainly because I suspect there will be a lot of A.B tunes there and to me, he's kinda hit or miss. But if the tunes are all as awesome as A.B's new tune "Relax" then this will be a contender for the best CD! ;)
Mad Max Good selection of artists. HU never fails to impress.
CDJay Cheers guys, gives us the strength to clear the last few hurdles!

@Quicksilver - There is a new slipmatt track on there, and it's interesting.

CDJay
Dain-Ja Looks awesome!
cruelcore1 Technikore, Brisk, Entity... Could it be better? :D

EDIT: Hopefully more Freeform than Break. Hardcore on Slipmatt & Entity CD

deathproof627 I don't really listen to technikore but hopefully he brings some nice tunes. Definitely psyched about the rest of lineup especially slipmatt and entity.

They always add some breakbeat stuff xD
Craigavon raver Bout time

Def can't see this happening cause slipmatt certainly won't be caining any freeform
Bonkers4Life Line-up = OMFG!
The Doc CDJay must piss himself when he post these teasers! Slipmatt is interesting, everyone presumes its ravebreaks but he releases these all the time on Decadance albums and his own label with BDB, so I'm hoping its UK hardcore, if its not then CDJay you have disappointed us, because they are not that many tracks that I havn't heard, Kutski plays them every week on Radio 1!

Well I'm hoping at least SOME Freeform. I know Entity is a breakbeat fanatic too.
Triquatra erm no freeform??, what do you guys think CD4 is going to be?? LOL
acidfluxxbass Yeah there's gonna be Freeform lol.... Entity himself isnt a huge Freeform guy. The tail end of his COH mixes had a bit but hes always been about the breaks to me. I just hope that Slipmatt mixing with him wont take his sets in the wrong direction. Ive always been a fan of Entity's sets, and I cant imagine Slipmatt will compliment them in favour of my palette.

warped_candykid But...didn't The Entity do that track Wisdom? That was pretty happy track, even though it's just a reconstruction of Nu Foundation's Wizzy.
dj switchback That's not Entity, who is an HU artist. That "Wisdom" track from The Entity is just a guise for Re-Con and Gammer. Sure Styles has something to do w/ that as well.

Also check out some of their mixes from the NEC/HBC podcasts for an idea of what they do:

On a side note, I'm a little bit dissapointed with 1 aspect of this album. I was sure there were preview album covers with Rankin mentioned, and now I find no Rankin! False advertising! :P

As far as I know about Rankin, he got so hated for getting so popular with his mixing style that it was probably a joke.

I'll look into the mixes. Thanx, man =)

But the disc I am 99% sure that wont disappoint me is disc 1.

There's no reason not to chuck in some Luna-C Supaset style samples of Deal Or No Deal, or him saying "NO MR BLOBBLY!!!"

acidfluxxbass You know what a milestone "5" album needs? Awesome intro's.

But no radio mashup's, contrary to popular belief, ITS BEEN DONE ALREADY!
CDJay You're in luck!

Each CD starts with a 60 minute lecture by myself on various semi-relevant topics. At least some of which was recorded whilst vaguely coherent. Note the quantifier.

CDJay
cruelcore1 And when is the album actually going to be released? I cant find that info.

I'm def not looking forward to technikore, don't know much about him but his and storm's tracks on hardcore heaven are absoulutly terrible, and i heard a wee bit of older stuff from storm like werewolf and i'm not impressed i think this mix is going to be disappointing to say the least

Im optimistic. Technikore is a good producer, more than not when he doesnt collab with Sy.
Check out his 'Runaway' track.

As i say don't know to much about him but them tracks on hardcore heaven are awful imo, do not like the style him and storm are doing at the minute at all

I was privatly thinking this but i reckon this could well be the worst hardcore ground release, don't really have any evidence but def don't think it'll match up to the rest
warped_candykid Technikore is more of a miss than a hit for me. Many of his tracks seem like they are lacking something; they are just too mellow & trancey. I love his track "Calling" & "My Intention"
latininxtc perhaps he's doing something different on this album. i don't follow much quosh these days, and i've only heard and have purchased a handful of tracks with technikore on them, but i'm feeling optimistic that he'll be more in sync with what HU has been all about and not push so much mainstream hardcore as he usually does. we'll know as soon as the tracklist is up
Archefluxx I think that Technikore can make good music. CDJay knows what hes doing. Hopefully Technikore will pull out tracks like Preferences and Runaway rather than the commercialized rubbish hes done for HH. Look at Al Storms mix on #4... It was fantastic, everything else Al Storm has touch (minus the whojamaflip releases) has been god awful.
Warnman I guess I must have missed a lot of bad tracks done by Technikore, because his 10 tracks I have on my PC, I really like.
Archefluxx Ready 2 Rave is another one I really liked from Technikore.

They've upped the price on it though.
CDJay The price stabilises once we've signed off on vendor specific packages, which I'd guess will happen in the next week. It's already dropped by 2 on Amazon.co.uk, compared to initial listing.

djDMS Yummy!

That's my cynicism put back in it's box for another time!
CDJay When will you learn?

I jest, appreciated dude!

CDJay
djDMS

Never doubted you for a second!

I can now say with no shame whatsoever that CD1 looks like it is going to be one of my favourite mixes ever.
Vladel Not happy at all about the number of tracks on each CD. It's gonna be 10 seconds of mixing and two minute tracks galore
djDMS That's why they're called mixes! 2 or 3 minutes is enough to get an idea of what the track is about, plus it leaves a little bit of mystery for when the unmixed tunes are available. 15 tracks per CD at 4 or 5 minutes each would be a massive letdown.
CDJay There's been trends towards quicker mixing and shorter tracks in recent years, I reckon the balance here is at least close to correct. Some tunes are used as "links", and a lot is done to keep the energy high or enable a sense of progression. It's worth noting that with close to 80 minutes as a cut off for CD, and mixing essentially involving things running at the same time, it takes some creative maths to come up with 2 minutes per track

If anyone wants to listen to a more leisurely and full track showcase then at least you've got the chance to hear what you like in a oft-fun fashion here.

IMO.

This all said, as always, we'll watch feedback and take on board any concerns once it breaks cover.

CDJay
Samination tbh I still think a fewer tracks help you select out the favorites you like, and that way you can listen to the for longer!

But ofcourse, most tracks are are built up having 2 parts that sounds almost identical. I think alot of tracks in Makina fix that that by the end of the 2nd part, the pitch gets altered to sound different (pitched up)

Fair enough , it wouldn't be a problem if tracks were released FREQUENTLY, but often it takes 3 or 4 months for a handful to be released at a time. With the scene being the way it is, you'd think people would want to get everything out asap to keep the interest there, but for some reason everything takes so damn long to do in the hardcore scene.

I'm really disappointed by the fact so many of the tracks will be a minute or two in length. It's what pissed me off with HU4 , and the reason why I appreciate HU3 a lot more.

And anyway, the Bonkers 1 only had 18 & 17 tracks on the discs, and people consider it one of the best titles in the series, so the whole 15 tracks would be a let down thing is rubbish. IMO it should be about quality, not quantity.
djDMS Why not quantity AND quality? And 17/18 is more than 15!

As CDJay has already said, this album is pretty much the only chance these artists will get to showcase their talents - so including as many tunes as possible (or are available) isn't a bad thing.

I know it's a pain waiting for tunes but we all have to put up with it so there's no point making a fuss - they'll come when they come and if we're bored of em by the time they're released it's the artists/labels that lose out in the end.

Plus, shorter tracks stops the inevitable misguided ripping of tunes from the mixes for DJ Useless to squeeze horrendously into a mix he doesn't have the right (or talent) to attempt!

this is VERY true! a lot of ppl (including me) complained when bonkers 17 came out and brisk & ham's cd was 28 tracks. these days very few ppl bat their eyes at 20+ track mixes. and many tracks these days barely go over 5mins long, so 4min mixes really is pointless and pretty dull creatively speaking

tracklist looks good, but personally the tracklist is never a factor for me as I love the mixing done on HU and they have never let me down!
Vladel Albums should be 18 tracks max tbh and using tracks as simple links sucks imo. I'm still gonna buy the album but i'd hoped for more than just cramming. Like robertyrob said, it should be quality not quantity.

Wow...what's the point of cramming 22+ tracks on a cd megamix (because the continuous mixing will be like, 10-30 sec....not much skill needed for that) if the tracks themselves are going to take 3-6 months to get out (because the interest will already be lost by then.) I would have rather had 18-20 top quality choices of tracks with proper mixing instead of a megamix of 2 min. tracks with rushed 'clubland-style' mixing. Megamixes work with Eurodance & Eurobeat, and possibly classic tracks, but with Hardcore, you need a good 3-4 minutes of track exposure to get the feeling of the track. I guess I'll still get it though for collection purposes.
The Doc I much prefer mixes with loads of tracks, thats what hardcore mixes should be about! Whats the point of having 15 to 17 tracks? Its then not a mix, just 5 mins of one track into another, also all the people who slated the new HH album for showboating their own tracks, CD 1&2 on this album seems to do the same thing but nobody is slagging it off!
Warnman I really hate it when DJs sterilise great tracks, simply by cutting off the half of it:
Coitus interruptus!
If I wanna listen to some bad "best of" or "Hitmedleys"-mixes, I'd looking for DJ Oetzi and Modern Talking crap all day long.

Key word in here...mixes. When I see the term "mix", as it applies to dance music, I think of a DJ mixing, showing off talen, not creating a mix collection of tracks.
_Jay_ Tracklist overall looks very powerful. Disc one looks fcuking mind-bendingly good.

Short tracks, long tracks. Meh, not fussed. If the tunes are good, no worries.

I've rarely allowed myself to get sucked into the Hardcore Underground brown-nosing (although I have enjoyed them a lot), but this one really does look the absolute business.
Dogsy Really excited about this- pre ordered today =)

I'm not bothered about the amount of tracks.. Kutski & Al Storm HU4 had 31 and I loved that cd. CD2 only has 3 more than the Brisk/Ham/Fracus CD's 23 on HU2010 and I still got a good feel of those tracks.
Can't wait to hear all 4 cds (esp 1&2)

Tracklist looks great!
D-tor Holy crap Raving Donkey! Haven't heard from him since his track 8Bit! I don't know who he is, but I think he's an amateur...?

Most Hardcore producers are amateur, lol.
warped_candykid After some thinking, I'm kind of interested in seeing how the DJs have mixed the tracks togeher. Every track should get at least 2:00-something playtime.
CDJay Most tracks are in for over 3:00, dude, there's a lot that are in longer too. Bear in mind you can have 78 minutes+, or so, on a CD safely.

There's some really cool mixes on there, and that's disregarding the fact that the mixes themselves are really cool.

djDMS Hopefully they were just late with the clips.
warped_candykid ugh! Nov 14th?
CDJay Nothing depresses me more than to confirm the release date has indeed slipped to the 14th. Despite (admittedly barely) making any and all deadlines, at the cost of our collective sanity, the manufacturing plant massively let us down by modifying their guaranteed delivery date by around a week.

We ummed and erred about opting for the 7th, but the way retail works (and online) you have to put in packages for stock and promotion, and given the ridiculously tight timeframe we couldn't risk shifting another week after the fact. So we've bitten the bullet, and opted for the 14th with a built in a satefy window for whatever acts of God are hurled our way.

I'm sure people will be disappointed, I know I am. It's massively frustrating as we've generally got on top of every aspect of getting these projects out. With working barcodes, accurate label copy, catalog number on the side (*HU3* Ahem* ) and every aspect of distro. Hell, I've got a text file permenantly residing on my desktop containing a list of all the things we can screw up to either incur delays or impede release. Sadly even wanting to update the text file to reflect this latest horror I don't really know what to put. "Don't get screwed by Pressing plant" is fairly catch-all, heh.

This may have some knock on effect in terms of HMV retail outlets, we won't know for a few days.

I can only apologise profusely, note that we'll build an extra week buffer in on any future release dates, and put up the microsite with some free downloads later this evening.

Sorry guys

djDMS Got an ominous email from amazon this morning putting delivery back another week. Is it just them are are we to expect a further delay?
CDJay We're ahead of schedule for delivery to distro, so barring the units actually disappearing entirely I'd say we're good for the 14th.

We purposefully put the date back by two weeks instead of one, to build in a buffer should something terrible occur.

As for why some vendors were still showing the 31st, up until that date, when the delay was confirmed, I have no idea!

CDJay
CDJay Actually while I'm here, we did a radio show on Kool London on Monday to celebrate the delay (well, release, but who knew?) of HU5. The result is on soundcloud here:

warped_candykid What label is CDR?
djDMS Means it's unreleased/unsigned
CDJay Just an update:

- Distro got the CDs on time (just) earlier this week, so everything is 100% on track. The strange dates different vendors are reporting is due to the last minute date change and the new release date not having disseminated accurately. So, for example, Amazon.co.uk will have stock this week and therefore should ship out the same time as other vendors.

- I have some copies here which I will use to furnish competition winners and label/artist copies. It looks fine, although we've got a snafu with the booklet (think: HU1). All the CDs have been tested, re-tested at the master and after replication. CD text is intact.

- We'll update the microsite shortly with some additional clips, and add some free tracks to the HU site (this would have been done before but we had some server downtime)

- Usual drill; we really appreciate any and all feedback (you'd be suprised how often I agree with people, even if silently ) and this isn't some TV advertised big budget album. This is an indie project that lives and dies on word of mouth, and cannot continue without your support. It's impossible to predict how each project will "do", but I will note that the last two albums sold out of distro within a few weeks and are now hard to get hold of. The quicker you order, the less likely you are to end up paying over the odds. Also, the quicker you order the quicker we can recoup and put another album out.

- Presuming further entries in the series, there won't be a long gap between this and future projects. Plural intended.

- *curtseys*

CDJay Am sure they'll update and ship soon enough.

Wilky How do u know if your play.com pre order has been shipped?

I was expecting. One to arrive this morning as sometimes pre orders come before the official launch day.... Put it didn't turn up
Archefluxx Got a problem. On my play.com account where I pre-ordered the album it says the company are awaiting stock... If the delivery is 3-5 working days, Im not going to get the album until the end of next week, am I? :S
Archefluxx erm. Bump?

We have no direct link to vendors, it's
handled by the distro. The reason it's
showing as out of stock is because they
seem convinced it came out on the 31st of
Oct but they didn't have any units. It's
possible they've already shipped some out,
and have exhausted their initial order or it's
possible they haven't shipped any out. Just
as much in the dark as you ;)

djDMS Looks like both Play and Amazon are doing the same, either saying it's not out yet or out of stock. I only preordered in case HMV wouldn't have it. I don't mind waiting when something is unavailable but that's not the case here. Iif it's in store tomorrow it's getting cancelled!

you can simply cancel the order from your account.

Im going to hold out though. if it says out of stock after release date I'll cancel the order and go march on HMV in Portsmouth.
CDJay The problem here is that their system thinks the album has been released, but it isn't actually "out" until tommorow. So it's shown as out of stock for 2 weeks.

There is really nothing beyond that I can do; we deliver the album to the distro who then ship it out to vendors, which happened earlier this week. So the vendors should all have it, and some will have shipped yesterday.

The shifting release date really hasn't helped matters, but I think that's more in terms of information displayed than any practical effect. As happens every time, some people will get copies tommorow, some will be a day or two later. The vendors and postal system are now in charge, our influence over this stage is nil.

This is what I've been thinking whilst reading the last page or so of this thread. It might be a little unnerving to read all of this "Out of stock" business and so on, but what the system is displaying probably isn't representative of the actual situation.
djDMS It's the only time i've EVER had a problem with Amazon not showing the right info on a pre order, and there have been plenty of changes to release dates before. It doesn't particularly bother me if it was the only way of obtaining the CD but knowing it could be sat on a shop shelf while i potentialy wait another 10-12 days is annoying!

I'll keep the original order but go and buy another one from HMV tomorrow, win win situation!
CDJay I'm fairly sure that the amazon thing is a typo; 24th isn't a Monday!

glitzandglowz Hahaha - I moved to a country where there is no hardcore and there are no parties! ... except all the way across the other side!!

I'm still very much into hardcore, (my HU5 arrived today!!) and I listen to podcasts by CLSM, Hard Beats Collective and Fracus & Brisk every time they come out. Can't get enough of my fresh hardcore... would be lovely to have somewhere to go out dancing but. :-(

I take a photo of myself with every new HU cd. It's tradition. ^_^
djDMS ...And by the end of the day there'll be about ten replies from men wanting to see them!
_Jay_ Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttt's aaaaaaaaaaaaaa giiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrllll!!!!!!!!!!

whittle1 Just arrived home and i've listened to the first half of the Darwin/Fracus mix.
Really enoying it so far. I've got to ask though - what is it with DJ's these days and introducing random breaks in the middle of tracks? Sometimes they work and other times they just don't compliment the songs at all, and this happens on every other track I've listened to from that mix so far! Yes, it was fresh and new to add breaks here and there when appropriate back in '05 and '06, but now its starting to feel a little too bland and generic.
That being said, if it wasn't for Darwin, Fracus, CDJay, the whole HU series, hardcore would be in such a sorry state right now. It's the saving grace of the whole genre.

Discs 2 & 3 are amazing, and despite not being that much of a freeform fan, I actually quite enjoy disc 4. It's disc 1 that I'm disappointed in. Besides one of two songs, the entire disc is forgettable, and full of generic RB upfront tunes, and ******** electrocore. I loved almost everything Al Storm was producing there for a few years, but over the past years his tunes have all taken a dip in quality. Disc 1 seems like a mix for a Clubland CD, and that's disappointing given HUs amazing track record. I own all the HUs except 2, and disc 1 of HU5 is the only disc that I flat out do not like. There's too many skip able tracks for me to actually take the CD out to listen to it in the car or at home.

I hate to sound so negative though - I love this album, and it gets a 9/10 for me. There isn't enough compilations releasing hardcore of this quality and style. I really wish BBHC would catch on like electrocore has. This and Hardcore Addiction are the only compilation albums that are pushing that "underground" sound, and that's a shame, since that definitely doesn't give me enough of a fix for the year.

Kind of off topic, can anyone point me in the direction of some compilations or artist albums in the vein of HU? I know Darwin & Fracus just released an artist album, and I recently ordered the Hardcore Addiction bundle, but I'm never really up to date on new CD releases. I bought HH: Summer Madness, but even that was pretty lackluster.

I'd say adding the artists on facebook is probably the best way as it's the main place for promotion at the moment, they normally accept anyone so you don't have to worry about knowing them or anything. Just have a look down the list from your favorite CDs and just search the artist on facebook for their pages and you should be able to keep up to date.

-This forum often acts as a bulletin board for artists to promote their releases and provide news
-Some of them are on Krafty Radio IRC from time to time
-Trackitdown, Hardbeatsdownload etc.

And facebook...again. Social networking seems to be the place right now.

Are you for real? I'm on disc one now, and have to say its fantastic, track 20 I've replayed 10 times, played disc 4 first and all I can say its freeform, some good but mostly boring (not really a fan) Can't wait for disc 3 then last of all disc 2!

QFT.

Also, it would wise to consider that democracy is a political ideal introduced by the ancient Greeks as a fairer way to govern,

not as a system by which everything else should be judged.
