I still have many questions about hardcore...But, hey! You'll never learn if you don't ask questions. Some questions I already know the answers to but I just want to make sure.

1.)What CD Compilations are must haves?
2.)What are the genres of Hardcore and how can they be distinguished?
3.)Which DJ's are the most well known and what are the names of their record label(s)?
4.)What are the definitions for: a.)track b.)mix c.)tune/choon d.) Old-Skool
5.)What is Side A and Side AA (A/B) on a record?
6.)When do you say, something is bangin?

Hehehe you never cease to amaze me with how organized you are. As far as your answer for question 2 goes- I think Triquatra already posted a helpfull little link:

http://www30.brinkster.com/triquatra/hhc.htm

1) Ahh, CD compilations. this is a tricky one, see every one have their one taste of hardcore. mine would be
Bonkers 9
Happy Hardcore 5 [Arcade]
NG/BB The Collection v.1 "Hi-Octane Hardcore Music"
Happyhardcore.com presents Hardcore Tsunami (...and soon Hardcore Tsunami 2 )
Thou this varies with everyone, so i will just say "listen to your heart and you will know" :)

2)Chicken already posted that link, but i label them like
"Old skool"
UK Happy Hardcore
Dutch Happy Hardcore
UK Hardcore
Freeform
Gabber
Makina (AKA Spanish Hardcore)
(If you want i can send (or upload to my "homepage") you clips of every "genre")

3)
I would say:
Hixxy (Raver Baby)
Scott Brown (Evolution)
Dougal (Essential Platinum)
Sy & Unknown (Quosh)
Sharkey (?)

4) Didnt understand the question :)

5) In vinyl "first" side is A and the other side is AA. Also it can be that the first side is A and second is B.

6) When it sounds bangin in MY head. Usually for me the bass is very... bouncy :)

...and have to agree with chicken, your very... organized... /me likes that in a person...

1)bonkers
2)Make up your own view of genre's, there are thousands of diff views on what is what
3) Scott brown = evolution, evolution plus (another 3-4 which he doesnt use anymore), Hixxy = raverbaby....which is him, ufo and mc storm and whoever he signs up for a vinyl contract.
4) a. 150+ bpm with a bass backbone (I feel the 140 view is wrong cause that means alot of old pop dance songs are "hardcore" b.song which go into each other, 3 or more (2 would be a mashup) c. great song which gets you moving d. song which is before 97 or baised to sound like back then
5) everyone knows what a vinyl looks like *hmmmmmm*
6) sy and unknown recent songs are banging, kinda song which wanna make me jump up and down

well I, I will, I will hardcore

1.)What CD Compilations are must haves?

Essential Sounds of the 80s vol. 1, 2 and 3
Now Thats What I Call Cheesey Boy Band Pop 35789
Sounds of the West Country compiled by Farmer Bob
(these compilations are staple ingredients in the diets of all the big DJs!)

2.)What are the genres of Hardcore and how can they be distinguished?

Hmmmmmm, as Silver keeps saying... its all Hardcore. But if you really want to start getting into it you got:
Up front/uk hardcore - trancey 4/4 kick drum led stuff eg raverbaby
trancecore - bit harder than uk hardcore, somewhere between freeform and uk
freeform - very acidy, hard trancey synth lines
gabba - distorted kicks and lots of noise
hardcore techno - similar to gabba
breakcore/breakbeat hardcore - edging on teh drum n bass sound, but with more of a hardcore vibe (hard to explain really just a general hardcore feel rather than DnB)
happy hardcore - cheese
old skool - older cheese
bouncy techno - happycore only harder and bouncier

Just my definitio0ns of the genres.... but I don't believe in all those subgenres... its either hardcore or its not

quote:

3.)Which DJ's are the most well known and what are the names of their record label(s)?

Oh gawd, ok then here we go.
Hixxy (Raverbaby)
Sharkey (Nu Energy, Bonkerz)
Scott Brown (Evolution, E+)
Sy & Unknown (Quosh Records)
Brisk & Ham (Next Generation, Blatant Beats)

They're probably the biggest of teh bunch, but theres many many more. Check out the big events flyers for more names... hardcore heaven, slammin' vinyl, uproar etc

quote:

4.)What are the definitions for: a.)track b.)mix c.)tune/choon d.) Old-Skool

a) a track is a version of a song recorded onto whatever medium (cd, vinyl whatever). Basically it is a particular remix of a song. For instance,
DJ Farmer Bob - Ger' Orf Me Land (Worzel Gummidge Remix)
DJ Farmer Bob - Ger' Orf Me Land (Mr Majika Remix)

Ger' Orf Me Land is the song, and Worzel Gummidge Remix and Mr Majika remixes are both tracks...... sorry, thats a really pants explanation but I hope it helps.

b) Either a DJ Mix - collection of tunes carefully blended together using the finest DJ tools and a smattering of expert musical knowledge until light and creamy. Then put in teh oven on gas mark 6 for 60-90 minutes until hard throughout
OR
a mix of a song... better known as a remix of a song (see above)

c)choon - usually refers to a very good track

d) Old Skool - see genre list

quote:

5.)What is Side A and Side AA (A/B) on a record?

Records have 2 sides. you turn them over and you've got another tune on teh other side (usually). Kind of like with tapes. The main track (usually the best) on teh record is labelled as the "A" side. Then, if the label feels that the other track is equally as good then it will get called the "AA" side. If its not quite as good, then it will take second place to the "A" side track, and get called the "B" side.

Okay...I do know records have 2 sides. (There is a turntable in my house, along with many records which belong to my parents and my sister.)

Trab. told me Side B usually has the track that isn't so well known yet.
...Is that correct?

Sorry, hope you didn't think I was being rude ..... just that in this day and age there are some people that don't even know what a record is, or even what a tape is....... eeeeee when I were a lad we had none of this 'ere new fangled compacted diskette nonsense... it was all about wax cylinders!!!

Yes, the B-Side is usually a lesser known tune... usually its not as good as the A-side tune. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, and I actually prefer alot of B-sides to the A-side.

AA sides are simply tracks which would be good enough to be considered for the A side.

Matthew aka DJ Underloop
