why do you need your own computer to go on the internet?

*edit* i won't be calling you or anything, lol, but how do you people dial each others' numbers there? cause you said your number is 07745420961 right? u don't break it down or anything? because if you were living in the states your number would be 0(774)542-0961. so 0 is the number you dial before the area code? actually if u were in the states 1 not 0 would be the number u dial first.

phonecodes in the UK are just (00000) 000000
"()" being the area code

mobile phones (cell phones) "area" codes start with "07"

to phone cheeply from the US to the uk its easyest to use a phonecard like ATandT

but the amount of numbers you have to dial is crazy

just to phone home this is what i have to dial

1-888-325-9370...5081-3030-9037....001-1720-422***
(Atnt callnum) (phoncard num) (uk num + 001 - 0)

thats 39 numbers which i have memorised (some numbers have been change so yall cant nick em)

What happens if you use a pay-phone? Would you get an operator telling you need a phone card or something?

Right, generally, the first 5 digits in a number are the area code. Land lines start with 01 or 02, e.g. 01275 for where my parents live. London is 020. Mobiles aren't linked to any specific area like they are in the US, so their area codes start with 07, and although they still technically have a 5 digit "area code", it can be pretty much anything, so people sometimes don't bother to separate out the first 5 digits from the rest of the number.

So,
mobile : 07123 456789
land line: 01234 567890
or 020 1234 5678 (london)
or 0121 123 4567 (0121 = birmingham, some areas have 4-digit codes)

If you lived within 01234 and you wanted to dial another 01234 you'd just dial the last 6 digits. Otherwise you dial the whole lot, including the 0, and with mobiles you always have to dial everything.
