i just got home from working at the hairdressers and have now been working there just over a year... Today i was told i have to start answering the phone. and i was taught how to book appointments (its really complicated, loads to take in)
Unfortunatly i hate using the telephone to people that i do not know, i get quite shy and scared! i end up not knowing what to say and i'm scared i'm going to mess up loads of appointments and book them all wrong?! i have been told i have a great telephone voice as i am polite and clear, but thats not the point!

does anybody have any tips or advice to keep me cool in my phobia of telephones?
thanks
xx xx xx

try to imagine the phone in its underpants!

hehe seriously though, I remember when I first was working and I had to answer the phone, at first I wasn't very keen on the idea but honestly after a few calls it's easy. If you really have got a good telephone voice then it will put the caller at ease as well and you can have a good old chat about split ends or whatever

Plus it doesn't sound like the sort of place that's gonna get many irate customers phoning up, so think yourself lucky. The place I used to work at made a habit of sending threatening invoices to people who were in fact dead ago and I used to get the none-too-happy sons/daughters phoning up abusing me for reawakening their pain! so i guess you could count yourself lucky in that regard!!1

I used to have that same thing, but when i was 17 i moved to another city alone, didnt know anybody there. So just the moving caused so many calls to diffrent customer services, trying to get apartment, loan from bank etc. After that, didnt have any fear at all. So yea, few of the first times may be very scary, maby you'll screw up few times. After that you realise that no matter what you do, it's not really that big deal. Just if you dont understand what the customer is saying, ask what hes saying. If you dont know what to say, then think for a moment what to say.

I work in an office mon-fri here for a school district so im used to answerin phones and taking messages for my co-workers all day.

Using the telephone is not as hard as it may seem. You tend to think that everytime the phone rings its gonna be a hard question or a complaint. but if all you basically have to do is take down appts. That shoulnt be too bad cuz their telling your their schedule...your not answering tough questions to them.

tips: * Always Take Every call in stride no matter how slow or stupid the person may come out sounding. Every where, Every job there is always a customer/caller that can test your patience. *And remember, their calling to talk to you so they might be just as nervous. *If you can still maintain a level of profesionalism its usually a good idea to break the ice with callers by just making a sly comment. Like bring it down to a freindship level so that in the future if they call...its totally a comfortable established connection. :)

hope its useful. Things get so hectic around here, just make sure your still smiling at the end of the day emmy

Yeh and at least you're answering phones in a hairdressers were you not going to get abusive callers. I worked in a call centre answering phones and after 1 day I got the sack! They told me that I might get a few abusive callers a day and when I got the first one I just lose the head with him but I did'nt know my manager was standing behind me at the time of the call and he just said I don't think this jobs for you so I'm going have to let you go.

Well I am one of 2 English peeps in my office.... we get calls from Greeks, Chinese, Thai, Iranians and all sorts!!! Very difficult to converse with them. We get Italians too.

When the ladies call up I tend to flirt which makes things easier heh.... you could try that with the Italian blokies.... although could be dangerous if its the bosses family LOL

You could always give us lot your work number and we could ring you up and you could practice on us...... silver could ring up and speak in Japanese to confuse the hell out of ya hehehe
