Call me snobby,
But i would not go to any venue which was'nt as "Grand" and "Spectacular" as the now (Discontinued) Sanctuary.
Is there a way you can filter Massive events from overpriced, small town, DJ's Decks on a Small table on the floor, Overpriced-drinks type of venue.

umm you're going for the music not the venue...right?
you should feel blessed to have parties held in spectacular venues, most of the places over here won't rent out spaces due to people wanting to crack down on the 'rave parties'
i don't think you've ever been to a party until you've experienced one in a barn. wooo go midwest =P

A lot of the time I always find that the smaller venues have a better atmosphere....the place always seems to be buzzing and everyone's on the same level...

My thoughts entirely.
The music has to be the main consideration surely?

a) does it matter where the decks are or what they look like as long as they do the job properly,
b) Are small town ravers any less devoted than those that are from main cities,
c) Are you really that bothererd about the price of drinks when your at a rave? you don't have many drinks at a rave anyway, otherwise, you gotta hold it while raving which can be difficult. I'm sure you wouldn't wanna begrudge one of these small venues of a few extra quid to get a couople of red bulls just to see yourself through the night.
d) yes i'm with Bri and DMS on this one as well. If your really mostly concerned with those things you mentioned, why would you even sit indoors and listen to the music? there is no-one there, if you play the tunes on decks you will have to mix them yourself and won't be able to rave, and drinkin galone at home isn't much fun either is it?
It's the music itself and the people that appreciate it that make a rave what it is; not the pretty bells and whistles on top. The big venues with loadsa rooms and drink deals or whatever, are simply icing on the cake to the main base of it all which is purely the music.
Honestly officer, it's for medicinal purposes! Just ask my doctor, he's right over there eating the curtains!

First off, define Venue, second. If you know anything about hardcore you should be able to look at a flyer or the set times with the names of the dj's and decide weather you want to attend or not. If i see a flyer that had, say, CLSM headlining, it is going to be a bit of a better turnout then say, if Milo was headlining (sorry milo, just had to throw someone out there, not saying that you aren't a good mixer, but CLSM has a better reputation). Now, if you get see a list that has more than one room, chances are it will be a bigger venue (as in building, or complex). But if you are looking for someone to drop a name. I give you two, Elation and Kniteforece. And the just did a party together that was huge. Luna-C, Ponder, Ham, Force, The Evolution, just to name some of the people that played that night.

Blackcrow, in short: just follow me! Trust Mattikake. Mattikake always knows how to find the best night... (in 16 years I've not failed to spot which will be a good or bad night yet).
Agree with the others though, you should be there for the music.
But there's more to it than that. There's who you go with, the venue, your choice of intoxicant in any, the the DJ selection, the hastle of getting there etc. You know what music you like and you know what type of set a DJ is going to play, just weigh up the pluses and minuses.
I'm a clubbing snob too. I'll always prefer the big event to the small one and I have beent to a lot of small events. The bigger events are always likely to have the bigger DJs and the bigger atmosphere though.

Whilst I agree to an extent, that it should be about the music and not the venue I do think that the venue plays a certain part in proceedings.
Size IMHO doesn't matter one jot! However, other aspects of the venue do matter.... and some places I have been have looked (and often smelt!!!) like the inside of a public lavatory.... doesn't exactly make for a great night when your wondering just why the dancefloor is so sticky :-/

I couldnt disagree more
Drink as much as you can, dont hold anything
Its very important esp if you rave when on drugs
I have found drinks are the most expensive thing about going to raves, I always make sure I have enough to buy atleast 8drinks on the night.
But im always near the front row, so im always sweaty and jumping around like a mad man.
On the subjecy of venues, just learn from your mistakes
