Die Hard @ Leicester Square, Belgrave Street, Leicester.

Having only actually been going to raves for the last 3 or 4 years, Die Hard before last night was one of those raves surrounded in legend. The kind of rave like Kinetic that you’ve heard so much about but never thought you’d get to go to, so when I found the flier for this in Leicester, I knew I’d have to go.

I rang up a few old skool ravers from back home and told them that Die Hard was on in Leicester and they jumped at the chance. After spending 20 odd quid on train tickets and a further 15 quid on taxi’s to get back home and pick up my mates and come back to Leicester I felt almost entitled to a good night, and Die Hard didn’t disappoint.

Arrived at the venue rather pissed up at 9 55ish. By 10 past 10 stood in the freezing cold I was sober again L. At this point it seemed like a very local kind of rave with everyone knowing each other and I was a bit apprehensive (classic pre rave jitters). Speaking to one guy (can’t remember your name sorry) who had bought his daughter to a rave for her 18th massive respect for that mate. Also respect to the guy playing with fire outside, it was shit but at least it was some entertainment whilst cold outside.

Finally got in the venue at about 10 20 after a very relaxed pat down from security, walked in and realised what kind of place this was, proper underground feel to the venue. Heard some guy playing hard trance and wasn’t sure to be honest if that was the main room to begin with, so started dancing anyway, until we decide to go a venture round the place at about half ten, it soon became clear that downstairs wasn’t the main room.

Walked into the hardcore arena and heard Ostro (I presume anyway because I couldn’t heat the MC at this point.) playing a wicked set got me right into it and after 10 minutes of nancying about on the seating area dancing I hit the dance floor. Some classic happy hardcore being played, but not just your usual anthems.

Next up was Double Decka, who played an equally impressive set, danced to this until about 11 30ish then decided to go and find the drum and bass room. Which we must have walked past 3 – 4 times because we just couldn’t find it at this point. Think it was around this point amongst the confusion I bumped into Georgie (obsessive gurner) and after much shouting realised she was saying I know who you are, your off USH!! Sorry bout that would like to say I was abit wankered but unfortunately I wasn’t, just I’m genuinely slow!!

Anyway went back upstairs and saw one of the sets of the night, DJ SUNNY. Never heard this guy before and it was only by chance we were in the room when he kicked off, absolutely blinding set mate, classic anthem tunes mixed with some lesser known classics from yesteryear. Loved every minute of it, don’t think I left the floor all the way through. It was a testament to how good this set was because when Scott Brown graced the decks the floor actually thinned out a bit and Sunny got a bigger cheer than Scott Brown!! (If it wasn’t Sunny I apologise to whoever it was, up until this point I was just matching up the set times cos I really couldn’t hear the mc’s that well)

Next up as I said was Scott Brown and to be honest wasn’t really that impressed by him this time, he’s probably the DJ I’ve seen most of since I started going to events and this was one of his weaker performances, was just really bobbing along and decided to go downstairs after 10 mins to get a drink (for some reason the geezer down there was only charging me £1.50 for red bull J.) Bumped into Georgie again and told her Scott Brown was on, wentback upstairs and was immediately made to dance again when Scott dropped Fly With You . He played a classic Scott Brown set really upfront to begin with moving onto gabber. The gabber was pretty cool, hadn’t really heard any harder music all night so went pretty mental to it.

About 10 mins before the end we decided to go and chill out for a bit, well that was the plan, ended up going downstairs to the Hard-style arena and sampling it for 20 – 25 mins then had a sit down. This arena was pretty disappointing look dead every-time I went in it. Would have probably been better off as a techno room or as a better drum and bass room.

At about 2.30 we went up and caught the end of Thumpa’s set, was quite impressed, good mixing, decent scratching and some pretty mental bpm’s thrown in for good measureJ, which all ensured I danced like a **** for abit longer! Tune selection was pretty good, some dirty tunes I loved but didn’t know the names of.

Next up was Jay Prescott, Kinetic and Die Hard legend, made sure I saw this guy. After some technical problems at the start (or forgetting what to do as the mc put it) Jay played a upfront raverbaby style set to begin with dropping classics like 24/7 Heartbeatz, Electric, Your Shining, was nice to hear these tunes as they were actually in a minority for a change which was good, which made sure I danced for even longer, just as I was beginning to fade and going for a sit down, Jay switched styles to bouncy techno/gabber which meant I only managed to sit down for about 5 minutes. Throwing my fists around like a fool for rest of this set, before he dropped one of my favourite tunes of all time (which for some reason I Can’t remember the ****ing name of at the mo. It’s the one Brisk always used to cane at Kinetic anyway) at this point I ran to the dancefloor picking my two mates up off the ground and threw them onto the floor aswell (not that they needed persuading to dance to this monster of a tune anyway) and danced like a twat up until the start of Sy’s set.

Sy’s set always proves a dilemma for me, I want to stay till the end of it but always want to leave as well because of getting taxi’s and stuff. Unfortunately the sensible side of me took control and decided to leave after about 15 mins, but it was a good set up until this point, only tune I remember for some reason is the Put your hands up in the air tune and Storm was there to rock the crowd, good vocal scratching from him, but I really don’t think he is worth all the hype. Then again he was a lot better at the bigger raves I’ve been to this year like Uproar.

Overall a top night, in a good underground venue, for a decent price, with a good mix of styles and DJ’s. The only thing it missed was some decent breakbeat hardcore upstairs and to be honest I think the crowd would have loved it to be honest.

Good points:
Price: (£10 was always gonna be a bargain). Line up: (varied enough with bigger names and up and comings. Mc’s 2 out of the 3 resident mc’s were pretty good, when I could hear them). Atmosphere: (****ing wicked crowd, well up for it including older and younger ravers) No Strobes: (made a nice change). Bar Prices: (Cheap as chips!!) Décor: (For a small event quite a lot of stuff around.)

Bad Points:
Drum and Bass room: (Couldn’t hear the music just the mc’s and whatever was on upstairs, well too light aswell.) Bar Staff: (other than one person all the rest were miserable as sin, think it’s because the venue is usually a rock club, also they ddin’t have a clue half the time about prices.) MC’s sound level: (Couldn’t hear them till about 1am!) Downstairs: (The hardstyle room was a waste of space really people were just using it as a chill-out room and the most people I saw dancing was 5! Perhaps a techno or decent drum and bass instead next time hey guysJ)
