Yeah, the key factor for every DJ. Crowd control. Fill the floor and make it explode... Or fail to do so and waste your chance. The second option is probably THE DJ's nightmare.
So this question goes to DJs with at least some experience. Do you use any special tactics here? Do you stick to the proven (for happyhard, that is) anthem-anthem-anthem template, or try a different (more successful) approach?
Here's an interesting insight by one DJ I know and respect...
Well in fact, I used to use the anthem-anthem-anthem approach in 100% of my sets. But then I wanted to try something different, because I noticed that all-anthems make people tired and burnt'out pretty fast.
So I started spinning like this: instead of going from one anthem to another, I divided them with non-melodic mixing, like intro sections of songs that I'd play later in the set. Now it's more like intro-intro-anthem-anthem-intro-anthem-intro-intro-anthem-intro and so on. It's perfect for long sets - it gives people time to breathe, rest a bit... Keeps them begging for more.
What do you think?

I just point a gun at them and say "Dance muthaf**kas!!!!" when I want them to dance.
When I'm not spinning hip-hop however, I tend to mix in lots of less known tunes that I think deserve to be anthems. I tend to dig all round everywhere to find lots of great tunes that thanks to low marketing budgets never made it into the Raverbaby category. I'll intersperse these with the odd well known track.

You can't play anthem after anthem that does not work... You need to build the vibe... it's just like sex... you can't just to the main bit straight away.... you work the crowd, tease them, show them your skills then lay down the anthems towards the end for a massive finish... If you did welll by the end everyone on the dance floor will not know what the hell hit them....
