I'm gonna put this question out there...
We have the means and the bandwidth (most importantly) to provide a high quaility realtime 24 frames per second video cast for our live shows from our Tokyo radio studios... Thing is we need a 2Ghz+ laptop to pull it off, our portable encoder laptop just don't cut the cheese anymore.
Thing is 2Ghz laptop's don't come cheap, if we ask for people to donate directly to this cause would people be interested to chip in for this laptop? or perhaps someone has a laptop to donate or runs a computer store or something?
Ideas?
it's all hardcore.

Could you upgrade the old laptop? Could come cheaper that way, though laptop parts are expensive. Anyway i think i could donate some money.

Like u say Silver the 2Ghz+ Laptops dont come cheap! lol
Im sure people would be up for the idea its just getting people to donte! How much would people need to donate before we had enough! People can donate to the site, but how many already have?? ( i know i haven't yet, im really skint, will be doing when i get paid tho!)

Whispering: The lappy is a P3, we need a P4 so there is no way to upgrade... plus laptops are not made to upgrade really :)
Hardcore4eva: Notthing really... I guess I would have to chuck in some cash myself
I was actually looking at the IBM site today and they have a 3Ghz lappy for just around 1200 dollars...
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=2580118&storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&dualCurrId=73 That might be an option if people can chip in for it. it's all hardcore.

Why does it have to be a laptop? It would be easier to get donations towards a desktop... a) they're cheaper, and b) you'll find people will donate parts from various stores/businesses/their own PCs when they upgrade...... just a thought

i guess becaus of how easy it is to transport a laptop rather than a desktop, as Silver says our Tokyo Studio's. could be wrong, a laptop takes
up less space aswell!

I'd happily donate for the cause, the last webcast was good, added something more to the live shows......plus we'll get to see as well as hear you go brilliantly lost for words when we nreak the 1100 listener barrier ;)
Just my opinion but you'd probably be better off with an AMD 64 processor machine instead of a P4, 64's have better encoding performance generally.
Sites to look at with decent prices are www.ebuyer.com , or direct from manufacturer websites.

Is there a reason why you need a laptop? Here is why I ask:
You could get a 2.4Ghz Micro-ATX computer (homebrew) for like 500$:

And an LCD touchscreen for 400$:

done. 900$ :) will post later

We need a lappy because we want it to be a portable encoder in the future I hope we can goto remote venues and weird places to do the shows.

Silver, you would only need a laptop if you didn't have a power source. Because you *would* have a powersource (for the turntables), a mini-itx or mini-atx pc would be perfect. If you needed WLAN (802.11g) then that is solvable through a PCI card, however, if you needed a Satillite (via SIM card and antenna) card, then you'd need a PCMCIA. Which isnt a problem for the much versatile Mini pc! You could easily save nearly a thousand dollars and get prehaps double the performance if you use a mini-pc. Please contact me with further details if you are interested! Which you should be :D

Also with a mini PC, you still have to carry the screen (witch is at least the size of a regular laptop), mouse, keyboard etc.

That screen is a 7" touchscreen. It'd fit in your pocket. I'm just presenting a way to do this if you dont get enough donations.

The mini PC is a solution but I dont want to have to carry around a keyboard, mouse, screen, computer and cables... A laptop is small and easy.
The places that we would encode from need to be a place I am either DJing at or in Tokyo... so unless I'm booked for the event there is not really a way to do it.
Although in the future we might be able to cover US events as we are training a new radio moderator at the moment and providing that moderator is playing / DJing the event...
The name will be released once they pass training :)
