do you want a mac or a pc is where you should start

what kind of keyboard are you wanting? a controller or external sounds?
do you want to do visual things on it as well as producing? (ie play games)

i built my own and spent about 2000 on parts alone, only complaint is it runs too fast =P

Spent about £500 on mine in total, and used my existing monitor and mouse/keyboard.

P4 3GHz
1GB RAM (minimum I would reccomend for audio)
MAudio Audiophile
32MB Graphics (don't need fancy stuff for audio)
Abit Mobo with Intel chipset
Evolution 2 octave mini-controller (I use my cs1x when I need more than 2 octaves)

Not only should you build your own, but you should buy all your parts off ebay. I built a 1 GHZ Athlon box with a GeForce4 MX for like 289$ in parts :D Not good enough for full polyphony, etc, but its good :D

I have a gaming rig i built myself.. could spend quite awhile giving specs on it but it probably wouldnt be relevant to music production
built my first computer about 4 years ago, just bought parts and figured out how to stick em together, its really not that hard since pieces only fit where theyre supposed to
just echoing what has been said, don't buy your stuff in stores if possible, local store's prices suck when compared to net prices/ebay
www.pricewatch.com or www.shopping.com for all your computer buying fun
might as well list my specs..

P4 533 mhz FSB / 3.06 Ghz (OC to 3.7 Ghz) (need to upgrade)
Asus P4C800-E mobo (875 chipset)
Corsair DDR400 low latency (2-2-2-5)
WD Raptor 36 GB HD, 10k rpm, 8 mb buffer
GeForce 6800GT (256 mb RAM)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS audio card (decent recording card, comes with recording software, GREAT audio card for gaming)

and some more stuff that probably belongs on a computer forum

in two thousand four, it was HARDCORE

yes they are but they are also a rape because they won't allow other companies to make parts so theres no competition to drive down prices
