Never seen one of them before. I would run late to TAFE class every morning if i wore that, even though i study binary as part of my IT network management course.

It's not that difficult once you get the hang, I can already work out pretty quickly.
After a while, you'll probably just 'see' the numbers straight away without having to think about it.

The current time is 0001:000110

I'mnot 100% sure on this, but anyway:

Top row = hours
Bottom row = minutes

Each LED represents one of the binary sequence of numbers (1,2,4,8,16,32). So the top row is made up of:

1 2 4 8

And the bottom row:

1 2 4 8 16 32

You add the totals of all the LEDs that are lit, so the time Bazza scribbled down (0001:000110) is actually

hours (0 + 0 + 0 + 8 = 08) : minutes (0 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 16 + 0 = 24)
time = 08:24

Not sure though, as it doesn't fit in at all with his post time lol

Doesn't usually take more than 5 seconds, as that's the length of time they stay lit when you press the button. Would use too much battery if they stayed lit all the time.
