a '4/4' kick drum is your bog standard beat effectively..
the 4/4 defines the pattern of the beats - in this case it is 4 beats to 1 bar.
you can hear what these sound like in pretty much any dance orientated track as they all tend to use the same or similar pattern...
probably not the best desciption, but im sure somebody on here can try and make sens eof it for you

it sounds like, "boom boom boom boom" almost all dance music is comprised of it.

Does it sound like 1995, 1996 style rather than the new hardcore stule that seems to sound like a crash rather than a boom?

the four beat isn't a style more over a form of beat formating

4/4 actually refers to the time signature of the piece of music. It is the most popular time signature in all genres of music (although Jazz tends to have some weird time signatures, as does some classical). Most popular/contemporary music tends to be 4/4 though. It means 4 crotchets (thats a single beat boys and girls) in every bar. When you look at a piece of score/manuscript, the time signature is right at the start, next to the key, and looks like 2 numbers, one on top of the other.
When a 4/4 kick is referred to it is simply stating that the time signature is 4/4 and the kick falls on each beat of the bar.

4/4 means 4 quarter beats to a bar and is the "simplest" time signature
in other styles you get stuff like 3/4 or 6/8
in 4/4 your music would sound like "boom boom boom boom" for every "bit" of the music
on the other hand in 3/4 you would get "boom boom boom" cause you only get 3 quarter notes to a bar
when you have 6/8 that means you get 6 eighth notes in a bar so technically a bar in 6/8 and 3/4 have the same time length but the beats would vary in accent
but you don't need to know most of the other time signatures as most popular music is based on 4/4 unless you like classical
