grrrrr.....rite,so i had a problem with my laptops hard drive and got it replaced with a nice new one and to my surprise its still running like a bag of spunk!
its running slower than ever (typing 8 letter words in google and its taking like 30secs to display them on screen)
its a good comp too!
-pentium 4 (2.8 ghz)
-ati 64mb ddr graphics card
-512 mb ddr-ram
and to be honest i pretty much give up on it.
i dont know whether its the insulation protecting internal parts has burnt away causing overheating or whether the processor is just done....but its running sooo shit...and the graphics driver is playing up to.
think it might be time to face facts and check the small print on my homes insurance. *sips coffee from cup procariously positioned above laptop*
does anyone have any advice on this as im pretty warey as ive never considdered this before.....
advice such as what would be a good replacement laptop.
something with at least equal processor speed and greater ram and i suppose it would help to have a decent soundcard...although i could just get a usb one.
cheers, rant over

Dont know about laptops, but on regular computers, when its running slower then it should, there might be jumpers misplaced or ****ed up settings on bios. So does it say 2.8 GHz on the system properties? Also did you install everything again after the new HD, or did you just copy it all from the old one? Can you see from task manager if some programs are sucking all your memory? Did you have anti virus and firewall installed before you connected the computer to internet?

whispering....new harddrive wouldnt take xp,xp pro,or 95 so had to ghost everything including os from the 4gb drive i was temporarily using.
as for spyware/viruses...im prety much sorted as i got a hijackthis log done just before wilders security forum stopped doin them...then downloaded microsoft antispyware...and have always used spybot/ad-aware etc.
at first i thought it was a software problem...and it might well be one....but a still have a feeling it is hardware.
prob gona send it to glasgow to a specialist.

...what? why? Ive installed windows like 10 times to a new HD, never had any problems. The only thing i can think of that would cause that, is that you didnt have cd-rom on bios boot list? And is there a program sucking all the memory? And is your CPU working at 2.8ghz?

dont know why...it would freeze at a certain point or just shut down...ive reinstalled from the recovery disk before with the old hard drive...only thing i can think of is that the recovery wont work if you tamper with original spec of pc.
regardless...got os on it again....will check if itys running ar 2.8....but even if its not and its running at something ridiculour like 1.8...its still miles slower than my m7ums comp which is 1.4.
sixfeet....the ram chips may work as they are removeable ...but thats about it as almost everything else is soldered to the motherboard.

I used to have problems on my machine (which is only 335MHz, 128MB RAM), so I uninstalled all the different variants of anti-spyware, anti-virus software I had (which it sounds like you have a lot of), and installed the complete McAfee suite which has everything you need and is pretty low-maintenance, it pretty much solved the problem. As whispering said, it sounds like theres something eatin all your resources so all you have to do is locate the cause and delete that bad boy.

Zippy...
DO NOT GET A NEW COMPUTER YOURS IS FINE!!! :O
Taking it to a tech shop is going to be so much less expensive than getting a whole new laptop!
I'd offer to fix it, but over the ocean shipping is just a TAD counterproductive :D
If you have absolutely decided that, nay nay, your computer is indeed teh broken, I love:

I blame the amount of pish bootlegs and eurocheese on your machine and it's decided to get you back by destroying itself.

Sounds like you got some spyware or keyloggers installed or something... feel free to donate it to HappyHardcore.com radio if you are gonna chuck it... we could do live video feeds if we had a laptop with that much power.

When its up and running, hit, ctrl+alt+del and get the task manager up. Look at the processes, and see how much cpu and how much memory each is using. should be able to see what process is eating up your processor power that way.
