You'll actually get a lower quality in mp3, it compresses the file which saves on space but lowers the quality in doing so. It can be done (if you still want to) use an MP3 converter you can download a few free, do a search in google. I think you can also do it in windows media player or real player but couldn't tell you how.

Every mix i do, i always keep an original wav file, and then use mp3 when distributing.

wav is deffinately a higher quality. try improving the way you record the mix and a bit of mastering to get it to send crisp, then convert to mp3

nah, thats not the case. While wma maybe be stock for windows machines, its not mp3 format and its not wav quality.
giddygosh, some things to try are this, make sure the signal isn't in the red when you are recording to your pc. Make sure you're recording at the right sample rate/bit depth (44100hz & 16bits).
You can most certainly convert your wave to mp3, but it won't make the quality any better, you'll need to fix that first. Mp3's basically give you a similar sounding quality, but at a much smaller space.

Why o why do people always talk about mp3?
Come on! It is OLD "It was released in 1992"
13 years old...
There are better formats, and still people want to use mp3...
Ever heard of .ogg?
http://www.vorbis.com/faq/#what or .m4a? http://www.m4a.com/

Ogg is not a standard. No matter where you go, you say mp3 and people will know what you're on about. Untill my car stereo plays oggs I'll stick with mp3.

lame encoder is what I use to convert wav to mp3. Its really simple just drag the wav file and drop it into lame, lame then converts the file and pops it back out as mp3. sweet!

Wait
Once you convert a wav file into an mp3 file... data is lost in the conversion, meaning less quality. If you convert an mp3 back into a wav the information that was deleted doesnt come back. Your gonna have the same sound quality as an mp3 exept read as a wav. Bugbear same goes with your wma and mp3s.
Thats why I said always keep an original wav file because once that data is lost you cant get it back.

If you have little experience in this, you should use iTunes, simply set the Import menu thing in iTunes to import to whatever bitrate of mp3 you want to use, 192 + preferably, and then right click the song file in iTunes, and click convert to mp3...and you are done...
