To go to a party local with local djs playing "no headliner". The venue is pretty large, balcony over looking the arena etc etc 8pm - 4am, fully licenced bar, decent sound system and lighting. Would you pay more if there was a big name playing? If so how much?
The reason I ask is we are currently in talks with a club in Oxford that will cost us £1000 to hire if it all goes ahead. We don't want to lose money but we don't want to scare people off by charging people too much on the door.
Any help on this much apreciated.

£6 means you need 166 people to turn up to break even and anymore is profit for the dj's wage's. i pay £6 to listen to resident dj's play scouse house in a club so im sure you can get away with charging the same for a one off night

I was gunna say £6 if no headliner £8-£10 with a headliner. It's always tricky knowin how much to charge for a night.

If you have just local resident dj's and only one name dj you can't expect people to pay like an extra £10 or so. And if it's just a normal night club thats gonna be playing hardcore insted of dance/club/pop you can't really chage more than what they would normally charge for entry.

Don't worry we're not expecting people to pay an extra £10 or so : ). The venue were using doesn't really have usual nights and usual prices they just hire it out to people to put on parties such as this one, everyone seems to charge something different. We were thinking in the £6 - £7 region so im glad to see people are saying £6, remember we do have to pay dj's as well as for the venue and were hoping to eventually get to a point where we can make a profit to put back into equipment, future parties, advertisement etc.
Were not money hungry, were just looking to do something to help the local hardcore scene. Alot of people round here have suffered from a lack of partying due to the sanctuary closing and then the events ending at Empire for whatever reason.

£6 before 11pm. £8 after.
If a 'name' DJ was playing £7 before 11pm, £10 after. but I wouldn't bother going,
imo, those who only go if there's a 'name' ain't really into the true 'essence' of what Hardcore/Rave is all about and the atmosphere wouldn't be....
....True, Real, genuine enough. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I've been spoilt.
Yeh, I know, a 'name' brings people through the door, the costs have to be covered.... ....shame.
If I won the lottery I'd give you the £1000.
We put our own gigs on back in the day and got a big regular following, so we know the score and wish you luck mate.

jam factory maybe?
i'm from near oxford and they're aint been anything like this before so you'd be able to get away with £7 mate!
although the zodiac charges £9 for andy c when he plays out there!
but i'd definately go for £7!

Prices of tickets can also tell people how good a night it is going to be.
When i look at a flyer and see a couple of decent headliners up i would expect to pay about £8. It often puts me off when i see a flyer with not-so-popular DJ's at a small amount of money; makes me think the club is saying "our dj's suck so we're trying to get away with that by charging a lower price".
Generally though i would say, for the sound of this venue, it sounds pretty cool. 8 til 4 licensed bar, to put too low a price on the door i think would actually put people off. Sort of a get what you pay for type thing.
My advice, start it off as £5 before 11 £7 thereafter. if your putting out flyers, maybe a discount with a flyer will also pull the punters.
Or maybe i'm chatting crap.

Cheers everyone :) well two people have said to charge a different price before and after 11 so will. def consider doing it that way seems a good idea to fill the place up earlier as well! Ionosphere feel free to give me the grand if you happen to win between now and June ;). Prices comin in are varied, keep em coming everyone the more people who comment on this the better it's a handy lil bit of market research.
Jester - I definitely see what your saying, luckily alot of local people know us and have been to our smaller parties so they know we can put on a good party... just gotta convince everyone else now.
I think were gonna avoid a headliner if we can... ultimately will do what we need to to get a crowd though.
GiddyGosh - its in the Coven so outskirts of Oxford.

I totally agree with Jester.... he is chattering c**p ;-) Seriously though, what Jester said!
at £1000 I'm guessing at capacity being round about the 5-700 mark? If you can pull in those sorts of numbers after a couple of events then you'll be laughing! £5 needs 200 people to turn up.... certainly possible, even for a first night. If some of the DJs playing have a local following then all the better!
One word of advice though - don't be disheartened if you make a loss over the first/second event. Things will pick up once you get a reputation. Most events start off making a loss. However, sometimes you just strike lucky! My first promotion was an U18 night, with a licenced bar upstairs for over 18s at the Palace in Blackpool. 2000 Capacity, and we got 1500 through the door. Managed to raise a couple of grand for the local hospital's MRI scanner appeal so it can be done!

Agree with that i find most big raves just lack atmosphere that you get from the smaller nights, musically they just go for anthems which is shit whereas a lot of the smaller ones have more room to let dj's play what they want.
The main thing that would attract me to an event would be variation in the music, 8 hours of commercial upfront is my idea of a knightmare and theres been a couple raves i've been to recently (big and small) that just pissed me off cos the music was that boring. Also if theres gonna be mc's they need to be at a reasonable standard cos that just bashes my brain aswell if there shit.
Not saying i dont like new uk hardcore a couple sets goes down really well but i'd only go to a rave if theres gonna be some old styles and hard stuff played aswell.
But aye bulby let me no what you get sorted if possible will come over that way, hope all goes well for you.

price also depends on what day of the week...if it's a weekday pay a little less...
usually a good price for something like that would be $8-$10 before 11 and $10 to $13 after. so like £4-6 before 11 and £6-8 after.
also, having a donation of some sort (can goods, toys for tots, etc.) will help...plus it looks good to the venue owner. so instead of seeing a bunch of cracked out ravers he sees items being donated for a good cause.

It will be a saturday evening. Music will be everything hardcore, breaks, freeform, upfront, happy, gabba, breakcore bit of everything but there will be more upfront than anything else. Would be good to see you there Baldo and any other hh.comers ; ) Dont know how possible the donation thing is... its a possibility but I cant see many people round here bothering... not because there bad people it's jus not whats on there mind when going to a party.
