I got a new phone last week which came with a few complimentary bits and bobs. One of these was a trancey/dancey MP3. It is alright cos I quite like this sort of thing (but not as much as Hardcore) but I think it is ripe for a remix. Where do producers stand on this? It was a freely distributed MP3 so is it bound to licencing laws? If you're interested in doing a remix can you do it from a complete MP3 or do you need it split into it's components ie accapella etc.? I have the mp3 (which I assume I can distribute) if anyone is interested.

I could go so many ways with this.
It could be under contract since it was distributed. Nothing is EVER "free". However, if you were going to do a remix you could change it from mp3 into .wav format to try to isolate the vocals (if there are any) to be used in a remix. Notes can be picked out pretty easily by anyone who has been working with music for any period of time. I wouldn't say "HEY I'M SHARING THIS WITH PEOPLE!"; that should be kept on the d/l. Other than that, if you did want a remix done for ringtone use I don't see a problem so long as nothing is charged for the services or the song.

Kat
If you can give us a link to the mp3 that'll do, and we'll give it a go.
However, in return for doing a Hardcore re-mix for your phone, you could make a donation to 'Save the Children' here -
http://www.happyhardcore.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=27123 Underloop is keeping the donation-line open until this coming Sunday. : )

It might seem free but it's not free, you can't distribute it unless it expressly says that it is okay to do that. You did actually pay for it, it was included in the price of the phone.
For remixing it, that shouldn't be a problem, as long as you don't sample the org track your cool to remix and distribute, if you sample it you will just have to keep it a little underground as it's unofficial :)

Silver. Thanks for the good advice mate. Kat's offered up a challenge that's too tempting to resist : ) that's all. No plans to put it out there.
Kat. Thanks for donating and let us know in what style of Hardcore you'd like the re-mix.
and Blue Frequency (only just realised that you're The Fourth, was wondering where you'd gone....). Thanks man, you're too kind : )

I never heard the original, but I like what I'm hearing! Very nice and fresh! Loving that breakdown - I'm a big fan of "wandering" synths like that.
