Woo, just got back from watching this movie, throughly enjoyed it. it wasnt a mindless action movie which made it all the more fun.
being british - i was surprised at how thrilled i was at watching Big Ben and the Houses of Parliment Explode!
i think a few of the americans around me didnt actually get some of the movie, not too many people over here actually know that we celebrate the 5th of november in england, and have fireworks and a bonfire, all due to the gunpowder plot.
one of the best movies ive seen in a while, anybody else enjoy it, dislike it?

I don't think many people outside of the UK know this. Its one of the strangest national celebrations going around.
Looks like decent movie, not out for another couple of weeks down here. One of few movies these days that i actully want to see

great movie, highly recommended...it's got pretty much everything...from romance to politics, with a bit of action inbetween.

this rudebowy King James VI of Scotland had recently taken on the English throne - now despite promises of a relaxation in the anti-catholic laws, it now appeared that the new King would be even MORE of a punk than the last one (bugger!).
Robert Catesby, a notorious catholic with "balls", felt the time was right to stick it to the man. He got together with two of his home-boys Thomas Wintour and John Wright for a couple of beers and of course to tell them of his plan to blow up the King and the House of Lords at the next Opening of Parliament. so with everybody blown to pieces, they would seize the young Prince Charles and the Princess Elizabeth and raise a frickin
revolution to return Catholicism to the land - booya!
trouble was - deep down, they were really pansys, and had to find someone with some real man-balls - a mercenary named Guy Fawkes
now - they had to get the damn gunpower under the houses of parliment, without anyone seeing. so first off, they tried to dig a tunnel, from a house they rented close by, after about two hours of digging, they thought "screw this" and decided to take another tact.
they decided to rent a celler, under the houses of parliment, then fill that up with bang-powder.
so thomas percy, and guy fawkes filled it up good with 36 barrels, and once that was done all they had to do - was wait for the opening of parliment...
well, some wuss gave in - and tipped off a friend who was going to be in the parliment that day....the friend went and told the big guy at the top - and then the cellers were eventually searched..fawkes captured, and made to open his celler...
well, the officials didnt take to kindly to all that gunpowder being under their govenment building, Fawkes was overpowered (probably with sticks) and then later on...
hung.
----------------------------------------------------
so! - each november 5th, England celebrate - either the foiling of the plot, or the fact they were going to do it - depending who's side your on! ;)
we have huge bonfires all over the country, along with mass amounts of fireworks.
---------------------------------------------------
years and years ago, children would go round with scarecrow "guy fawkes" dummys and would ask "penny for the guy" door to door, much like trick or treating.
The more you know!
I roughly summerised from: (http://www.britannia.com/history/kaboom.html)

This definitely was a fantastic film...I even went and saw it twice in theatres (and i never do that)
Oddly enough I never knew who Guy Fawkes was until November of this past year when Hard2get mentioned Guy Fawkes day to me and I had no clue what he was talking about!
They give a bit of the background on Guy Fawkes, for those who have no clue, but I think you can definitely appreciate it more when you know a bit of the history going into it.
The film kind of had a "1984"/Animal Farm/Nazi Germany feel to it; with a cool super hero thrown in. Sounds weird but, you'll get what i mean when you see it!
I would recommend it to all.
