For anyone who has sent out demos could you answer some questions for me?
1) I know to send it out on CD but how many songs should i send?
2) Considering im in Australia, would i still be taken seriously on overseas lables?
3) Do the songs have to contain vocals to be taken seriously?
4) Anything else i should send along with the CD?
Thanks for the help.

Your best 2-3 tracks. More is not better.
2) Considering im in Australia, would i still be taken seriously on overseas lables?
Yes, see Weaver.
3) Do the songs have to contain vocals to be taken seriously?
No, but instrumental tracks are harder to keep interesting for 5 mins so you have to have a killer non-vocal track.
4) Anything else i should send along with the CD?
Your contact info :)
But to be honest, I recommend you give your CD's to local DJ's to play out before you send stuff to labels, if the DJ's don't play the tunes then you know your tune is not good enough to play out, you only get one first impression :)

Another couple of pointers to add to Silver's.....
1) Drop the label you are sending it off to an email/phone call before sending to check addresses, ask if they are accepting demos, and get a name if you can so you can address your covering letter personally. They also expect your demo this way too so it will arrive with at least some air of anticipation
2) although "its all about the music (man!)"...... keep your presentation top notch! It may be the best track in the world, but if you can't get the label to listen to your track rather than one of the other 50 or so CDs piling up then whats the point? Also include your return address/name on the jiffy bag - that way they think "oh, its that Mushroom dude who emailed mne the other day" and hopefully put it straight on (or bin it ;-) )
A professional looking package (Neatly labelled CD with contact details, a "one-sheeter" about the track perhaps, along with your biog and most essential a covering letter!) implies a professional person..... although a good label puts out great tracks, they aren't going to want to work with somebody who is "too rock n roll" to deal with on a professional basis....

GREAT tips there Underloop!
doing this will mostly guarantee your tracks be given a "serious" and full attentioned (if thats a word) listen.

I disagree, if someone sends me a professionally labeled CD, cover art and all these other things I'm just thinking this guy is trying to doll up something that doesn't sound good. A simple CD with all the information creates no expectation when listening... well at least for me :)

*makes a note not to bother with fancy labels when sending stuff to Silver ;-) *
