I used to all the time, I even went as far as to hide my CD's from my bro & his mate when I was 16 because I thought they'd have a go at me for it. Now his mate is one of my best friends & is probably the most open minded of all of my friends about music. I've never before heard of a man who lived his entire listening to the likes of Black Sabbath and such like suddenly turn around and say "I like this Stu, what is it?" referring to some hardcore.
He came to me a while later and asked me if I could track down a record for him (before I had interweb), turns out it was Marc Smith - Identify The Beat. He's also asked me to track down tracks like Ham - Are You Ready? (the 2004 one).
Strange how things work.
Now, thanks to him, I have on show my vinyl collection for all to see, with the attitude of fcuk you, I won't listen to what you tell me to listen to. But I do still get embarrassed telling people I like hardcore sometimes, mainly because of the misconceptions like you mentioned in your post Chris.

I know what you all mean. But i've never been embarassed to say i listen to hardcore, if anything... i boast about it, lol.
I'll be in a pub or something and people will say, "This is shit music." reffering to some commercial pop and i shall say "Yeah, it's crap." and they will say "What music are you into?" and i shall say proudly, "HARDCORE!" Hehe. I don't care what people think. Sometimes i get pissed off with people stereotyping the scene and laughing, but i don't really give a shit deep down. If they don't like the music i'm into, so what? I sometimes take flyers to a pub and show the barstaff and so on what i'll be going to.
I love the hardcore scene, i love hardcore. If anyone got a problem with that, ****`em. :).

Aye it's not like a mad secret, i live in a one bedroom flat and have boxes of vinyl even if i wanted to hide them i couldnt.
I dont mind people listening to what i play even, they think its shit they think its shit and most do.
Just in this country hardcore means happy hardcore, the whole rest of the world basically it means gabber.
When i say i like hardcore i dont like the way people assume its stuff i totally despise.
I suppose i do get a bit embarrased anyway like you said there psycotic raver your in the pub and sittin with some mates and lassies you dont no too well.
You say hardcore there jus gonna think your some idiot who munches 19 pills for breakfast and waves his arms to a sped up childish version of trance, or even worse the late 90's bollocks like children of the night or whatever.
I play select tunes i love from bouncy techno, gabber, oldschool, breakbeats, drum n bass and old happy.
So i'd normally basically mention every other type of music i like bar hardcore until i get a chance to play them a set.

Have never been embarrassed to say I listen to hardcore and I like most of the "crap" that they do know of as well as the stuff they don't ;) End of the day I could probably pick fault with all "their" musical tastes if I felt that way inclined.
I don't see how people can say hardcore isn't pretty much commercial already, it's sold in supermarkets and loads of stuff has been in high positions in the album charts which is enough evidence for me. Sure there is plenty less commercial sides to it but a genre only needs one commercial sub section to be commercial... I know it's not "big" like some commercial genres but with albums like Clubland you can't say it's not "pretty much commercial already".

And i agree with bulby it's definitely commercialised, obviously not your savage speedcore/breakcore etc but a lot of uk hardcore and nu style gabber definitely is.
They both use very familiar sounds that there audience no, marketed in commercial cd's and with some of the uk stuff is basically a faster version of pop trance (anno not all of it before someone starts that argument again) so how can it not be commercial.
Not saying commercial means shit either cos it doesnt, just a spade is a spade at the end of the day.

Aye thats it i have no problem with people knowing the music i dj, and thats stuff most would hate a lot more than what they think hardcore is.
But with music thats only as popular as hardcore you cant really expect people to no the ins and outs of whats available, they only seem to no what i hate so i'd rather not say it's what i mix.
And your also right most people have wank taste in music but different strokes i suppose.

Yeah I know exactly where your coming from people just think of the most commercial sound within the genre. Same with say a underground Hip Hop DJ telling people that he mixes Hip Hop and them assuming that's things like 50 cent etc.

Yeah exactly. People like different things and TBH if you look at any genre it's not difficult to point stereotypical things out and laugh at them ;).

Some mainstream exposure is good for any scene as it attracts more people to come and part with their £££. As long as all the producers, DJs, MCs, Promoters etc don't start compromising on what they want to put on/play/say to get more money then the scene then it will be fine (just a few extra shit tunes to tollerate for a while )
quote: You say hardcore there jus gonna think your some idiot who munches 19 pills for breakfast and waves his arms to a sped up childish version of trance,
you get that regardless of what scene you're into. I'm mainly into Drum&Bass now and when I tell people what music I like they will make a similar statement like the one above regarding Hardcore and say "Drum&Bass? some farty wobbly bassline noise with a twat going Bididididididididididididbaaaaad! over the track"
The problem is people will always look at the faults of a certain scene or genre of music to make their own personal choice seem more acceptable, rather than looking for the best in all the different styles and diversifying their tastes.

I used to love (and still do!) this cheesey track when I used to regularly rave to Hardcore, Hixxy played it loads in his sets................I'll get my coat

If HTID or some other event can pull in 1000+ just in London or wherever it is...I'd say Hardcore is quite big. I know, some people traveled but still. I'd say hardcore is popular at least in the UK.
In Syracuse, where I live, I go to all the ska shows. Ska isn't that popular, less than hardcore I'd say, and we're lucky if we get 50 people to come to a show.
